I had a guy who worked cyber crimes (so, a lot of going through criminals' computers, lots of times for CP) come and talk in one of my classes about computer security, and the thing he mentioned was how fucking grueling it was to go through. He said the kids in those pictures had the deadest eyes he'd ever seen.

I think that's a little unfair to people in the closet. Being attracted to kids and being gay aren't really related, especially since some of them are only attracted to girls.

Maybe for some of them, there's an element of novelty to it. I have to wonder with people like mrz if it's not about trying to be as edgy as possible - he frequently takes the most extreme stance possible, and I think that he tries to shock people. Given how a trademark for lolcows in general is a need for attention from others, the whole idea of being into it "for the novelty" wouldn't surprise me. A couple of the loveshys here seem to routinely return to the Farms to get laughed at and ignore advice, when any rational person would probably take the hint and abandon ship. They seem to revel in embracing novel ideas contrary to the norm and defending them no matter how retarded they are, and then they weave some narrative in their head that paints them in the right somehow. Whether they're Loveshy or Tumblrina, Foamer or Bad Boy Conservative Journalist, they all seem to latch onto some insane idea or narrative and defend it to the death, like having this one distinguishing thing that sets them apart makes them special in some way.

I think @Nara's right in terms of kids being a focus for so many of these guys because of what kids represent to them. Loveshyness attracts guys who are already not very confident with women, with themselves, with sexuality and it's an echo chamber that just further kills any chance of developing any confidence. Kids don't know how to avoid sexual predation or how to sniff out a sicko like a grown woman is more likely to - and are more likely to trust adults. So children are a combination of easy target, sexual outlet that they can easily win the trust of (unlike women their own age), and probably more than a little power fantasy (in terms of females that they can dominate/control).
