He did it through consistent and dedicated nonviolent methods, which pretty much everyone, including other black activists thought was impossible. He wasn't just a great speaker, he mobilized pretty much every large anti-Jim Crow protest during the Civil Rights era which was also across racial lines. Remember that it was the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. MLK brought together labor unions, religious groups, black political parties, and other left wing movements. How you get all these people to stay on the same message without any violence breaking out is beyond me.
