Well I turn on Twitter for literally 5 minutes and am greeted with THIS SHIT. I saw it gaining some asspats and responded with a vague respectful disagreement, but this bitch is not ready for what I really have to say. To preserve her anonymity, I'm just copying the text of her twitlonger.
It’s about time I make this post because I’ve hit my limit to be honest. To start this off, I want to say I will be removing “predebut” from my bio because I’m sick of the expectations that come with it, let me explain:
So you're actually going to debut? good on you.
If I didn’t have predebut in my bio I would just be like any other god damn content creator or twitter artist on this platform. I wouldn’t have people down my throat screaming to “make content !!!” even though I already do. And before you start bitching about how I’m “not a content creator” cause you can’t use basic thinking skills or check google:
“ Content Creation is the contribution of information to any media and most especially to digital media for an end-user/audience in specific contexts “
Content creating isn’t just streaming. I don’t know where this community found this idea that content is ONLY streaming. I’m an artist and always have been.
You don't post your artwork and you don't stream. Don't say you're an artist if you're not actually making art. Don't shitpost on Twitter and think that's creating content. Nearly 5K followers and you're doing fucking nothing.
Now to my point, I have NEVER in the MANY communities I have been a very active part of for years have I seen the kind of pressure and expectations independent Vtubers have. I expect a LOT of this comes from the fact that the existence of Hololive and company backings has put this idea into people’s heads that making a Vtuber avatar and “just start streaming” is that easy or cheap
Aside from having an actual computer (which you should have anyway if you're an independent digital artist) it costs very little to start streaming. Again. For me, it was one hundred dollars. ONE. HUNDRED. DOLLARS. That's not a whole lot.
I am a single independent creator with unmedicated adhd.
You'll get no fucking sympathy from me. Get medication or the treatment you need or shut the fuck up about your condition.
I work my ass off DAILY to not just afford this all, but to also make the content I need to debut. This includes stream assets, my actual model, the model’s rigging, emotes, etc. as well as a PC that is good to stream with and things needed to stream. I am personally not interested in rushing into this and streaming when I am not prepared. Especially with my adhd, I know if I just start saying fuck it and stream with a png, I’m going to loose all my motivation to even make my model
Alright, sweet cheeks. Let me break this shit down for you. First off, unless you have an actual fucking job or you're making a living off doing commissions (and I don't see anywhere that you say you are) then you're not working hard enough if at all. Calli worked 3 jobs to get to and stay in Japan. I work a single day job and live frugally otherwise. Let me break down what you actually need.
-Stream assets: Plenty of networking threads exist for free overlays and cards. Use them as placeholders until you find an artist for a custom job or, if by the sounds of it, get off your lazy ass and make them yourself. The only thing that costs in that case is time.
-Actual model: You have a PNG. Fucking use it. Don't waste money on something you don't even know you'll enjoy doing.
-Rigging: See above.
-Emotes: If you're on Twitch you need to be streaming for 5 days before you can even think about it and even then you get a SINGLE emote slot to work with. Miss digital artist, FUCKING DRAW THEM IN A NOTEBOOK OR SOMETHING AND SAVE THEM FOR LATER. Again, Time is a free resource.
-a good PC: Well, got me there. Even then, you don't need "THE BEST" PC. You just need something that can run OBS and whatever other programs you want if you're just doing PNG streaming to start off (which you should be doing anyway.) I know people who stream on old as fuck laptops, and not just Calli. Nobody cares about how scuffed your stream is if you have a winning personality to make up for it. See: Omaru Polka. Too bad you don't have that to compensate, though.
As for your ADHD shit...FUCKING. DEAL. WITH. IT. I don't let my anxiety get the better of me, for fuck's sake. I streamed while sick with COVID.
If someone doesn’t want to start streaming with a png, that’s their choice. If someone isn’t debuting as fast as you’d like, that’s a you problem, not them. This idea that if you don’t see a vtuber planning a debut a month after their twitter magically exists they’re a “vtweeter” is absolutely ridiculous. Like we sit on our ass all day and tweet?? When you have absolutely NO idea what is happening behind this screen you see. This toxic mentality a big portion of the Hololive community has made for independent Vtubers is just disgusting and I’m so sick of it. And to preface when I say this, this is absolutely nothing against Hololive, it is against the fans who have taken a great opportunity for people and creators and used it as a weapon for their gross mentalities
Don't write a check your ass can't cash, then. I've seen very successful camless streamers before vtubing even fucking existed. Don't call yourself a content creator if you're not creating content. If you think our mentality is gross...START CREATING AND STOP TWEETING.
With that being said, all I wish to be is a streamer when I have a model. I want to make YouTube content, I want to make people laugh and be happy !! I want to be an escape for people. This is something I plan to take very seriously for years, Years in the future I likely will be ditching the vtuber model and just using a face cam as well. I feel like with having this stupid word in my bio that people have just shit into the ground, I can’t be what I want to be. So yes, I will still be debuting and being a Vtuber, but I am not going to be using any specific labels anymore because clearly all they do is cause more issues than benefit.
...you know, I thought I wanted to join hololive when I started this shit and I realized after the 2nd generation auditions started, that it really wasn't for me. I'd rather just have a small community I can interact with and would much prefer the freedom of being an independent content creator to do what I want to do with my own shit rather than be held to the standard of the corporate side of it. Hololive and Cover have their own issues that I personally don't agree with after realizing I was romanticizing the idea of becoming a holostar. Say I got in. If I had to choose between a life of (relative) glitz and glamour in exchange for having to DFE on Kiwifarms and my current persona and Discord, I'd stay on the fucking farms.
My point is you don't know what you want until you take the first step and you haven't even set foot into the world of content creation, sweetie. You could be in love with the idea of streaming but as soon as you hit that "go live" button end up hating every second of doing that...in which case your entire setup is just one big fucking boondoggle and the only reason you would wanna keep going is because of some sunk-cost fallacy and not for the love of the hobby.
I don’t want to be labeled and stuck to this community and have these insane expectations forced onto me. My debut will still ofc be in the works, and I’ll continue to work my ass off as I have been, but I needed to say this and get this off my chest because this has been a major issue not just with me, but these expectations are wide spread across the community from outside sources.
You're not working your ass off, you're sitting on your ass. If you were working your ass off you'd be doing everything to create content that would make people want to buy your merch, not create merch that people who have no idea who you fucking are don't wanna buy. You're putting the cart before the horse and you haven't even checked to see if the horse is fucking alive.
This shit is all too common in the Envytuber world and I'm at my breaking point with it. Thank fucking Christ I spend more of my time in networking discords with actual content creators to bounce ideas off of and generally have a good time with than on that cesspool of a site.
