Which is why they're likely to compromise by offering to "reform" the police into something more centralised and paramilitary, and more uniform in structure and purpose. What they will likely want to try and do is amalgamate local county, city and highway police into arbitrarily defined regional forces with large, isolated headquarters, united under a state-wide police authority that follows some form of to-be-defined federal policing regulations. It can be sold as increasing police accountability without "sacrificing" the police to the de-fund mob, but the end result would be a remote and even more bureaucratic police force that is much more easily controlled and neutered. It won't. The concept of nixxing the police is just too deeply unpopular. It's got virtually no actual support.
I don't think it would be particularly successful across the entire US, but you'd definitely get some states willing to sign up to the idea, which would end up with a divide where some states have what is effectively a common, federalised police force, while others still operate with their existing, independent departments.
