It won't. The concept of nixxing the police is just too deeply unpopular. It's got virtually no actual support.
Which is why they're likely to compromise by offering to "reform" the police into something more centralised and paramilitary, and more uniform in structure and purpose. What they will likely want to try and do is amalgamate local county, city and highway police into arbitrarily defined regional forces with large, isolated headquarters, united under a state-wide police authority that follows some form of to-be-defined federal policing regulations. It can be sold as increasing police accountability without "sacrificing" the police to the de-fund mob, but the end result would be a remote and even more bureaucratic police force that is much more easily controlled and neutered.

I don't think it would be particularly successful across the entire US, but you'd definitely get some states willing to sign up to the idea, which would end up with a divide where some states have what is effectively a common, federalised police force, while others still operate with their existing, independent departments.

So who’s the first to pull the trigger on this idea?

By the way this is the video of protestors confronting Mr Gugino I mentioned a few pages back. They think he's some kind of plant. He makes some interesting comments about being there "to watch the show" and "the country's going to collapse in a few months"

I remember when they proposed an $8 million cut. And look at the state of the city since George Floyd. Too little, too late. Well, that's what happens when you listen to radicals.

Hope it was worth it.
These days there is amazing lack of thought into why things might be the way the are. Instead of wondering why there is a plug in the bottom their boat, they must sacrifice that plug on the altar of always progressing forward. Who cares if the ship starts sinking, you just threw the plug overboard for being racist.
