He was quite beloved by the public but there was a mixed opinion about him around people who worked in animal welfare like marine biologists. Opinions of him were souring as time went on by people in the field. Basically, he was on his way to being canceled and it was cut short with his untimely death.

There is more than one account of history. Think of how Wilson and FDR are perceived by the left and right respectively (though Wilson has started to get some criticism from the left for being a massive racist) and you will have an idea as to how divided opinions on 2020s politics will be.
