Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Or will his running mate automatically replace him just the way Vice-President is supposted to step in after the Big Man in the White House chokes on a piece of matzo? Does he even have a running mate yet?

We have a de jure head of state, Joe Biden, and a de facto head of government, Kamala Rice. Saudi Arabia probably has a similar arrangement with their King and their Crown Prince. The systems are different enough that no comparison will survive too much scrutiny, but I think the effect is the same. The HOS will be trotted out for state occasions while the HOGs do the work of running things, deciding where military action will be undertaken, etc.

I don't actually know anything about KSA politics, I just wanted to call Kamala a HOG.
