An update from my church:
So as I mentioned before, I wrote a letter to my pastor describing my frustrations with our continued reluctance to reopen for in-person worship again. Ended up being four pages long, though I tried to include a couple jokes so as not to seem like I was getting down on him specifically (we frequently rib each other, it's in our nature). Went in for communion yesterday and had a bit of a discussion with him afterwards, and he said he read my letter a few times, mostly to be sure that I wasn't just blaming him for all this; he was worried initially that my quote of C.S. Lewis on tyranny was directed at him, but he realized that wasn't the case (and I made sure to clarify as well). It felt good to know that we were on the same page, and he was also questioning the efficacy of the various limitations.
I don't know if my letter had any impact on this or not since I didn't ask, but they're going to discuss in-house worship at the church council meeting this week, and he made perfectly clear that he's ready and willing to get back to worshiping together as early as next week, and that he will let the council know as much. He'll abide by their decision, but I think most are ready to come back in, if not all. There may still be some restrictions that I'm not happy about, but I'm willing to put up with those for a little longer if we can at least get back to worshiping like normal.
And honestly, at this point, I'll take any glimmer of hope I can get. I even gave a dear old church lady who I've known my whole life a hug on Sunday (after making sure she was fine with it, and I know I don't have the coof), and man, it's crazy how something that simple can make you feel normal again.

I don't know about you, but if I was the top leading medical professional, I'd keep my mouth shut after the fifth media blunder. When COVID-19 kills people, it does so by triggering profound endothelial dysfunction in a positive feedback loop of inflammation and oxidative stress, attacking the lining of blood vessels until they become leaky and edematous (this includes the blood-brain barrier and the blood-air barrier in the lungs; the pneumonia is just because of ALI and pulmonary angioedema in the blood vessels). The body tries correcting this by the endothelial lining releasing clotting factors to plug the leak. Vitamin D works to increase Nitric Oxide bioavailability by down-regulating the ROS that would otherwise destroy that nitric oxide. This not only inhibits the replication of the virus (which is dependent on low nitric oxide levels in the blood vessels for its Spike to work correctly), it also reduces inflammation and oxidative stress. It’s a two-pronged therapeutic effect.
When someone has low Vitamin D, what instead happens with COVID-19 is a positive feedback loop of inflammation and oxidative stress that’s like rheumatism and lupus occurring inside the blood vessels, characterized by up-regulation of various kinds of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, release of clotting factors like von Willebrand factor, release of cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-6 through NF-kB pathway activity, and the formation of antiphospholipid antibodies and the like.

He agreed that antioxidants like Vitamin D and N-acetylcysteine could help correct the endothelial dysfunction.

By the time I hit my twenties, I realized that transhumanist stuff was going to end up being a real social problem if we didn’t get a handle on it and make it freely available to everyone instead of it being used to create caste systems. I was really ahead of the curve with this shit. I argued with people over this stuff like eight or nine years ago. I told them our agriculture and energy usage were completely unsustainable. People were skeptical. They were like, we’ll never hit peak oil, peak phosphorus, peak potable water, you’re just fear-mongering for nothing. They were convinced that we’ll always find a technological solution to every conceivable social problem, that we didn’t need to be frugal or alter our habits in any way. They were firmly entrenched in the cult of progress.
Now, they just started trading water futures on the market, the Davos men at the WEF want us to eat bugs and live in concrete drain culverts, and millionaires are asking experts how hard it would be to build bunkers and have security guards fitted with shock collars so they can’t run away when money is worthless.

The heat really isn't much worse than most other areas in the summer, and it's a lot easier to go "yuck I'm sweating" then work around being snowed in.
Gators are pretty easy to deal with, stay out of inland bodies of water so you don't accidentally step on them, and if you see one just slowly and calmly walk away. They run off the logic "if it runs from me it must be something I can eat".

Everywhere in Florida has central cooling. Not even close to everywhere in Yankeeland has central heating. I've had cooling not work during the night in the summer and it sucks, but it's doable. I've had heating break during the night in the winter up north and I thought it was the worst thing in the world. Fuck, my heating didn't work for a month in New England during the winter and that was among the worst things I've ever experienced.
