It's probably too fucked to find a source that doesn't hate his guts, but the most charitable explanation seems to be "he read the names of AIDs victims on air" for which he apparently has apologized for.
Not sure why people should feel sorry for people who fucked their way to death, but here we are.

Which ignores the fact that acceptance of homosexuality is a relatively recent concept and that their side was just as homophobic, if you want to use that word, until the late 90's at the earliest.
Obama said that marriage was between a man and a woman, and plenty of Labour MP's supported Section 28, for instance.

Actually it's the other way around. Very early on, the gay liberation movement saw the pro-pedo movement as monsters and denounced and purrged them really early on in terms of not wanting anything to do with them.
It was the LESBIANS, especially radical anti-male lesbian groups, who kept dragging their feet on expelling the chomos from their wing of the LBG movement. It's while stuff like the Vagina Monologues had a pro-grooming/pedo section to it (that had to be scrubbed/rewritten to age up the character when the play hit the mainstream) and why a lot of mainstream LGB groups that were male driven leadership-wise had nothing to do with the radical lesbian groups in the 80s. And even then, it took the radical feminists seeing the writing on the wall to force the lesbian sects to purge the chomos from their rank and mission statements.

I have no idea where that comes from.
