Marx is not respected because he started communism. He is respected because of how well he analyses capitalism and offers communism as an evolution of capitalism (which in turn started as a means to better the lives of peasants in medieval times).

When something evolves it's an adaptation that retains the advantages of the prior iteration while manifesting advantageous improvements. Communism proposes to throw out everything that doesn't work AND everything that does work in favor of a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow which will be accessed by riding unicorns over it.
Capitalism is an evolution of mercantilism which is an evolution from feudalism. People who know a small amount about economics know this. Russia never had capitalism before the revolution. Russia was a feudal state with limited mercantilism. China was not capitalist. Korea wasn't. Cambodia wasn't.
What occurred in these shit shows was not evolution from capitalism. It was a tragic failure to evolve toward capitalism. Since then all of these states have adopted some capitalism to avoid a repeat of previous communism induced mass starvation. Except Korea.
