To be fair, it's mostly because the project was very much a secret. People involved probably be told only what they need to know, so it isn't surprising minor details like this slip pass the middle management.

Iirc the main reason Gundou is disliked by some is because Nijisanji had her and Roa collab a lot after they first debuted, but they stopped since apparently they don't get along behind the scenes. Given subsequent behavior from Roa, I'm guessing this was mostly Roa's fault.

After Kiara stop being too into it (She's still over-bearing it imo, but I'm gonna assume that Austrians just have no idea what personal distance mean) and Calli learned how to be less awkward when "rejecting" it, the ship became way less cringy and more in-joke fun.

That said, I think that everybody agree that the friendship they do show when they don't yuribaiting is actually way more engaging and precious to see. These two lives in a foreign land that really aren't that friendly to outsiders, away from families and friends as they leave their home chasing their dreams. They understand their isolation more than anyone else, and it's heartwarming to see that they instantly bonded over this and having jobs that finally let them see that a lot of people do appreciate their talents and in a way fulfill the dream they have chased. Kiara's tears ain't kayfabe.
