Games that couldn't be made today / video game things that wouldn't be acceptable today

Before I heard of Leisure Suit Larry, I remember when Blockbuster used to have this game. And the amount of fan-service in these types of sports was ridiculous. Not even Outlaw Golf could compete.

Before he was a “late night comedian”, Stephen Colbert used to actually be an in-game announcer in Outlaw Volleyball.
Well, we have Dead or Alive Xtreme Volleyball. Only if you want to import.

I didn't notice this pun until it was brought up just now somehow despite knowing about porygon for porygon's entire fucking existence but his name is literally just polygon with an r in typical l/r mixup fashion. Though it's a real thing that happens when translating from asian languages to english sometimes some people view that sort of thing as racist to asians, probably because of foreigner stereotype caricatures utilizing this shit to it's fullest for years now.
I think thats pretty clever, but if it came out today I'm sure twitter would have a field day about it

The golf game was actually pretty decent. It stood out because there wasn't much to play on Xbox at the time.

Two years earlier the developer made this and the contrast between the games is pretty funny:

About half the characters in ClayFighter, including a Jamaican-accented shaman carrying a rubber chicken, a buck-toothed chink in a gi, and a trio of cannibalistic pygmies.

They just don't make 'em like they used to.
Speaking of that particular game - there's a website called The Bad Game Hall of Fame that takes a look at infamously bad games (and consoles, occasionally) and takes a more critical look at them and their history to see if the ire towards them is warranted. The articles can actually be pretty damn informative and enlightening, only, there's one fatal problem: the author of these articles, "Cassidy", is a raging SJW:
They identify as non-binary — preferring the pronouns “They / Them.” The quickest way to their heart is a Taco Bell® ‘2 Chalupas Supreme®‘ combo (with chicken, if you please). Their dream is to one day find a big bag of money.
Anyway, "they" reviewed Clayfighter 63 1/3 not that long ago. Guess what they spent a good chunk of the review complaining about?
As surely as I hold ClayFighter 63⅓ accountable for perpetuating racist caricatures, I also recognize that it doesn’t exist in a vacuum: The 90’s as a whole are rife with these sorts of depictions for the purposes of “comedy” — even within the medium of video games. Witch doctor sorts like Banjo-Kazooie’s Mumbo Jumbo and Crash Bandicoot’s Aku Aku are well-worn tropes for the era, as are amalgamated-Asian characters like Shadow Warrior’s Lo Wang or Hogs of War’s “Sushi Swine” soldiers. But even taking the standards of the time into consideration, and assuming the intent by Interplay as having been to play these characters as so absurdly over-the-top as to comment on the nature of stereotyping in itself; you’re still left with a character clad in karate gi sporting buck teeth and a bowl cut who shouts “EGG FOO YOUNG” (as recorded by non-Asian actor Jeff Bennett) when he performs karate chops, plus a dark-skinned shaman (voiced by the very white Jim Cummings) making constant allusions to fried chicken. If you’re of either of these ethnicities and happen to find no offense in these characters, that’s fair for you. But the fact of the matter is, depictions like this can make others deeply uncomfortable, and that shouldn’t be discounted.
"FEELS OVER REALS, CHUDS!!!111!!!" Again, it's actually rather sad, because the articles are actually really damn good otherwise....aw well, I guess I shall continue to skip past these tirades whenever they crop up.
I didn't even know the main character was "native american" until recent years where it became "problematic" to have a native american main character who wasn't a Johnny-Depp-from-The-Lone-Ranger walking stereotype.
Wait, I thought stereotyping minorities was bad, according to these folks? Or is it another case of their rank hypocrisy shining through?

Complete with endless "how to get your GIRLFRIEND to play games!" articles, pick any random issue of any random magazine from about 2007 and below and you are guaranteed to find something that's politically incorrect today.
Caddicarus spent a good chunk of the video that was him reminiscing over the UK PlayStation magazine talking about it:
ballz ballz ballz ballz lol
Don't even let them hear a SECOND of the in-game music - they'll have a prolapse complaining about how "sexualized" it is:

Come to think of it, I don't think any of the Build Engine shooters can be made in today's cultural climate.

Aside from Duke Nukem, there's the fact that Shadow Warrior is done as an over-the-top parody of Hong Kong action flicks, 70's chopsocky movies, and anime with a very stereotypical Asian protagonist.

Blood is pure undiluted goth edgelord kitsch with a protagonist who was implied to be a veteran of the Confederate Army and the fact the game is set in the notoriously racist Depression era.

you can make these games no problem, you just need massive balls of titanium to ignore the faggotry and go on about your biz. they will end up contradicting themselves one hour or another.

i didn't quite get to have access to many "politically incorrect" things you guys do but we did have a comedy show in the 80's or so that a actor literally said "it was a mistake nigga" and sex jokes/innuendos. yet GTA5 nigga is allowed to exist because question mark, sjw's are very selective and hypocritical.

Didn't Shadow Warrior get a remake and a sequel recently? I think if you play up the parody aspect it can work. I know I loved the remake.

According to the comments on Youtube and Wikipedia, Outlaw Tennis has Stephen Colbert, Outlaw Volleyball has Steve Carell.

The Outlaw sports games are a perfect snapshot of 2000s culture, hyper sexualized, loads of attitude, un-PC humor, even at the time they stood out by going so balls deep into it.

Yes, the first Outlaw Golf is legit a good golf game with some really cool and creative courses (like one where you can see a carnival in the background)

Outlaw Volleyball however I wasn't able to really get into despite the sexy girls, I haven't played Outlaw Golf 2 or Outlaw Tennis at all.

It's magazines that are probably the main reason why SJWs think gaming was a "boy's club" in the past, it was never really true, there were plenty of female gamers in the past and even many of these magazine had a female editor or two, but the magazines definitely chased a teenage boy audience, but what's wrong with that? Are teenage boys not an audience one can chase?

The Postal 2 development team had a lot of involvement from Facepunch (now Knockout). The Knockout forum recently just banned the word "retard" and is dominated by the troon culture that you see on forums like Something Awful and Resetera. I doubt we'll be seeing another game like it. Sure a sequel is in production but I don't think it will be the same.

Depends on what you mean by saying "the past". It's really fun that women are interested in games now, in the past that was a rarity. What annoys me a bit is the ones I've known for a long time that play games now but cannot admit that in the not so distant past they saw it as stupid shit for dorks and grown men playing vidya was just something they had to put up with and try to put the brakes on.

There's always been plenty of female gamers though, it's not anything totally new, the Final Fantasy games for example had a huge female following, absolutely huge and survival horror games like the Silent Hill series had a large female following as well.

This idea that female gamers were a huge rarity prior to the 2010s isn't true.

Lack of monetization. People in this thread are naming all the typical things I'd expect in a thread like this, but annoying faggots whining about sexy women in games, toxic masculinity, racism, homo/transphobia, etc, are annoying faggots that both publishers and developers could easily and readily ignore if they so choose, and some of them do. Monetization though? That started years before the current woke trend was even a thing outside of specific college campuses.

We'll see the return of sexy women being the norm in games, along with general political incorrectness, and that return will happen sooner then some of the pessimists like to think, but the ugly trend that started with oblivion horse armor will still be around long after the modern puritans have lost all influence and power over gaming.

I didn't say prior to 2010. If you grew up before the PSX and N64 then there's a different story.
