Absolutely. When the Hololive English cast debuted, I watched a bit of Gawr Gura's streams, they didn't really engage me. But, I immediately understood the appeal of Vtubers. It's a very wholesome little moment in your day to have a quirky, interested, and upbeat person "engage" with you. Cute anime character asks you about your day and how you're doing and create a fun loving environment and community to be a part of that's peak escapism. The santization comes from not talking about controversial shit and they're very good actors; you don't feel pandered to by a corporate actor, but instead have the privilege of spending time away from the real world with the welcoming and charming anime person. Regular streamers as themselves generally aren't as positive and talk about what they please to a much wider extent. Even if they're still beholden to rules, Twitch isn't usually banning people for saying Trump is stinky or whatever politishit. Vtubers are peak parasocial relationship and cater to what people tend to want out of a stream without any of the other shit that could crop up while they just wanna relax, even if for just a moment.I agree with flamenco's take, a lot of the professional vtubers are playing a character or exaggerating some of their own characteristics for entertainment purposes. Just slapping an Avatar on isn't really the same.
One of my friends absolutely loves Vtubers (Akai Haato is his favorite for those wondering) he wears the merch constantly and baked Akai a cake of her stream mascot Haaton. It was showcased on stream and he was ecstatic. He ALWAYS is up to watch her stream from start to finish. I think it's rampantly autistic but, again, the appeal is obvious. These people who use their Vtuber avatar to talk about politics absolutely miss the very simple appeal of Vtubers. It's not just hot anime lady gets my dick hard. It's that the hot anime lady gets my dick hard while creating a wholesome environment for me to escape reality for a moment and connects me with a community of like-minded individuals. While I'm sure many a faggot will love to beat their girldick off to big tiddy anime validating their opinions about the coming revolution and succession of the class struggle or whatever. Such a thing misses the point and will never cast the same net as the established corporate Vtubers that these tards want to recapture.
