First off: No social repercussions? Gay men aren't that high on the oppression hierarchy. I'm not a fan of Buttigieg, but for many progressives he was no different from a cis-het white guy. Glenn Greenwald was accused of colonializing brown bodies because his boyfriend is from Brazil. Furthermore there are still enough gay men who blindly follow any man in a dress. Subversive gay culture was itself subverted in the 90's when the whole "you have to include us in any instutition, or you're a biggot!" circus really begun. Now gay men are as boring and uncreative as your average straight person and we'll probably never hear of gay designers again who made fascist fashion for women, since women now think they can make their own dresses (they can't).
And the mainstreaming of troonerism shouldn't surprise anyone. I know that everoyne has his/her/its theory for the sudden explosion of troons. The culprit is industrialization, as I've pointed out before. Industrialization and capitalism disrupted all old traditions that were built to help humans to live in a civilization in harsh conditions. I&C made life much more comfortable and in the spirit of the enlightenment old traditions and norms were questioned as harshly as probably never before. Some traditions of course became useless in an industrialized society, but the questioning became a juggernaut that wants to destroy anything that is old. Troons aren't new and were known in many different cultures under different names. The difference is that their behaviour was ritualized and they had to upheld their own troon laws (in Greece, for example, you had to become a kind of priestess). Modern western troons, on the other hand, don't have to follow any rules. They only exist to disrupt. What they don't realize is that without ritualized behaviour society can easily turn against them again if things get tough. Gay men and lesbians will face the same issue if they can't signal to society that they fulfill a certain niche role, as they did in many different cultures in different times.
