I have no idea how things work in Canada, but pre-op qualifications for Bariatric surgery vary greatly from surgeon to surgeon, and in the US, insurance to insurance. Many Bariatric surgeons do not require weight loss pre-op. Many do not even require a strict pre-op diet, save for the liquid diet to shrink and dry the liver, which can be anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks depending on program. At the end of the day, Bariatric surgery is considered elective and money makes the world go round. In a perfect world, more surgeons would be as strict as Dr. Now, but that isn’t the case. *Most programs at Bariatric centers of excellence(in the US)require ONE nutritional consult, some medical testing, and a psych evaluation. Some centers offer a pretty intense evaluation, which I hope would be the case for Chantal, but many have a brief 5-10 minute meeting that’s ridiculously easy to BS your way through. She would also likely be able to choose which surgery she’d like, which could be a disaster. RNY(roux en y gastric bypass)is the gold-standard of weight loss surgery. VSG(sleeve)has a ridiculous revision rate but people flock to it because they think it’s “less invasive”(it isn’t). Guarantee she’ll regret the sleeve. Who knows if they even offer DS(duodenal switch)in Canada with government insurance. It’s less known but the most effective.
It’s no secret to anyone here that she will fail unless she gets intensive psych treatment. All that aside, we know how diligent Chins is at taking her medication. She’s gonna have to take a crap-ton of very specific vitamins every single day or she’s gonna be in a world of trouble health-wise.
Here’s some things she has to look forward to:
1) Post-op hair loss
Most people will lose A LOT of hair post Bariatric surgery. Usually starts around months 3-4 post op and stops around 1 year.
2) Requiring about 6 separate pills(vitamins)daily unless she splurges on the good, inclusive Bariatric ones.
3) Loose skin
4)Never taking NSAIDs again(if she chooses RNY)
5)Never drinking with your meals again, and up until 30 minutes after.
Yet again, she thinks it’s another quick fix.
