Yep. I need to remember the next time Louis does something awful and he tries to defend him with the excuse claiming Louis is trying to improve himself, I want to point back to this moment where he said the exact same excuse now and Louis didn't change at all. I'll just make a codeword to search for later when I remember it in the future. Pineapples.

Lou doesn't understand that if he actually changes, his apologies will be accepted. Even here--as many have pointed out, we love a good redemption story. He has not lost the ability to redeem himself.

What he has lost is the benefit of the doubt. Even assuming he's sincere in his own mind in saying that he wants to change, he thinks that an apology is a sort of magic incantation, that apologizing profusely will get people to lay off while he implements his big Plan to Make Himself a Better Person. Well, ya know what, Lou, that might have worked after your first round of bad acts however many years ago. But by now people have seen you apologize and promise to change over and over again and you never change. So people just don't believe you anymore. Go read the story of the boy who cried wolf. You'll like it, it has animals in it.

And then you have to actually make real changes in your life, even while people still don't trust you. And that means following advice that you don't want to hear, like getting a job and not being a burden on people who make the mistake of feeling sorry for you. That's it. That's the only way out.
