Equality Golbat: “Sapiosexuality is not a real thing. You’re just ableist.”
Sapiosexuality is defined as attraction to intellect. Well, let’s stop right there, because intelligence is an ableist construct, so if you even believe that intellect is a thing, you are ableist.
If you aren’t radical enough to accept that, consider this analogy: Imagine I told you I’m attracted to all genders, but just not to any Asian people. Would your initial assumption be that I just have a subconscious sexual “picker” with arbitrary preferences, or would that make me sound really racist? “I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with Asian people, I just get really turned on when people pull their eyes open vertically…“
Also consider that “sapiosexual” is never used as an antonym, because no one ever identifies as being attracted to “low intelligence”, incompetence at tasks, and more apparent disability. The closest we get to that is fetishization of physical disabilities.
…and just to head off complaints before they come (though I know they will come anyway), no, I am not saying that disabled people are stupid. I am saying that “stupid” is a concept invented and defined by ableists with the express intent of devaluing (mentally) disabled people. Therefore, the only ways to argue that (mentally) disabled peoplearen’tstupid is to either say they aren’t really disabled, or reject the entire notion that “intelligence” is a thing. I opt for the latter.
