Exactly. You own what you like and if want to expand your collect then that's up to you. Just doing that doesn't make you a consoomer, because you're doing it on your own terms, on your own time.Heck, it could also be the start of your very own library. Like say, a collection of Star Wars comics, of books about certain topics like the Crusades, or books about political correctness. That would actually be of service to others if you opened up your own library in the future with that stuff.
I have a collection of toys from different science fiction series. It doesn't mean I want to collect every Gundam and Transformer I find, but those that I do personally like, I snatch up. I'm not going to buy a Han Solo figure just because I'm a Star Wars nerd, but if I see a Stormtrooper or Mandalorian figure that looks cool, and I could afford it, I'd snatch it up.
Funkopops get shit because they're ugly bland and sterile pieces of plastic with no soul behind them, and because they were made popular when being into nerd and geekshit means to watch every MCU that comes out and think Thundercats Rawr and other CalArts shit are "making a statement". Even in hindsight, pogs are better things to hoard en masse because you can burn them for fuel or if you really like keeping them around, you can keep quiet about it as a secret shame.I think this meme always features people throwing matches at others when their own ass is made of straw.
"Nooo if you don't make the meme face it doesn't count nooo it only applies to people who hoard stuff i don't hoard"
You're right on topic!Apologies if I derail the thread from the funco pop discussion, but its about damn time a thread like this comes to into being. I'll add in something I've wanted to say for a while now for food for thought.
And that subject is western anime weeaboo fandom, which is just drenched in consuum-erism.
Ugh. They're bastardizing makeup too? I'm a dude and even I think this is excessive. The beauty/makeup community is in an absolute state of rampant consoomerism.
For some background, "makeup influencers" first began to rise on Youtube in the late 00s. Michelle Phan was the biggest name in the game and became an early youtube celebrity with her makeup tutorials. These tutorials were a huge step above getting advice from a magazine and were loved by many girls who had never learned how to apply makeup well, and found that the people making these tutorials were more relatable than professional makeup artists and celebrities. At this time, most tutorials by girls like Phan would say stuff like "use a dark brown eyeshadow here" or "start with your favorite base foundation". They would have a few specific recommendations here or there, but the focus was largely on good technique over using specific products.
Things have... changed. Companies caught into the fact that these influencers were not only popular, but easily buyable, creating a new channel to advertise products. Tutorials became more focused on specific products and product lines. That brown eyeshadow now had to be from the latest Anastasia Beverly Hills palette ($65). Oh, and now you don't just need that, you need a primer before you apply the shadow, a setter for after you apply it, six other shades, and these 4 specific branded brushes, all to get the right look. Then came haul videos and a huge increase in the amount of "luxury" beauty brands and makeup lines available. This all happened around the time "Instagram face" makeup became popular as well, I guess justifying the need for an ever-increasing arsenal of must-have beauty products for the perfect face. Stuff that was barely even used a few years ago like Highlight became must-have products with people stocking up on all the different brands. Haul videos are probably where the plot really got lost, it all shifted from technique to brand and just acquiring massive hoards of (the right) product. It's gone form actually using, to hoarding and consooming.
Now something that's really important to mention is that MAKEUP EXPIRES. It does not last forever. Now, to what extent is debatable; powders can last a pretty long time, but stuff like liquid lipsticks can expire in as little as six months!! Mascara dries out on its own in just a few months. Anything liquid has a shelf life. Anything that's a cream can dry out or go bad. And this stuff can smell or even get moldy if it goes bad. You might as well be a food collector.
Another important thing is that makeup companies will re-release the same shades over and over in different palettes, as single shades, or with slightly different branding, but really dedicated consoomers will still buy an eyeshadow palette that's 60% already stuff they own and 30% colors they aren't interested in.
All that being said, here are some examples....
Massive eyeshadow collection. ONE eyeshadow palette can take over two years to finish if you are using it every day. So this is several lifetimes worth of eyeshadow.
Makeup room
Makeup influencers love to do cleanouts where they throw away all the shit they used only once so they can buy more shit to put in its place later:
Getting rid of £1,000 of makeup
"I'm very well aware of all the makeup that I have"
(I just grabbed random examples btw, I didn't watch these, but they are all over youtube)
Now you might say well this is their job and they get all that product for free. And you might be right. But that's not the whole story, as non-influencers get sucked into the product treadmill and buy 50 eyeshadow palettes and 70 lipsticks that they can never use.

Now I don't want to throw too much shade at r/MakeupRehab as the sub is mostly people who are trying to NOT spend more money on makeup. But the sub is absolutely full of people who spent hundreds or thousands on makeup, and they are regretting because they can't use it.
The makeup community also has a lot of crossover with other notorious consoomer things. Here's a high end Star Wars collection

This one is really high end, the lipsticks in this photo are $40 each, the small shadow palettes are $65 and the large one is $125

As a guy who loves anime, I also loved a lot of western animation that is close to anime, as well as some cartoons that don't even try to emulate anime's style. I liked old Transformers and GI Joe cartoons which were made by TOEI, I liked the Tartakovsky Clone Wars animation which was inspired by anime, I liked Transformers Prime and Clone Wars which had a tinge of anime influence, and I liked old cartoons like Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Kids' Next Door, Duck Dodgers, and Grim & Evil, none of which even tried to emulate anime. Unlike hardcore anime fans that seem to dislike western animation, I have no problem CONSOOMING both Anime and western animation at the same time. So long as the story or the art style is good enough to hold my attention, I couldn't care less if it came from the west or the east.Apologies if I derail the thread from the funco pop discussion, but its about damn time a thread like this comes to into being. I'll add in something I've wanted to say for a while now for food for thought.
And that subject is western anime weeaboo fandom, which is just drenched in consuum-erism.
Not just from the unwashed masses and Japanophelia spergs who wish they could be Japanese and push onto you how great and awesome anime without your permission like asshole space invaders, but to the whiny manlets, geek cred hipster soyfags, and dangerhairs who also believe that anime should be Japanese but that they can only create anime in their first world spoiled self hating white ass suburbia closet pussyfoot ethnocultural racist purity spiral by taking over pop culture news outlets, backscratching and bedfellowing and cavorting with anime importers and publishers of the same mindset by nepotism, and thinking that if you spent at least a cent on anime shit, that is the equivalent to you being a shareholder and a stockholder AND a creative committee member of any anime that comes out of Japan, ever.
You see, I bring this topic up because anime as a style as a whole isn't like trying to come up with a new metallic alloy to help carry the obese or trying to successfully domesticate animals or plants to make them farmable and sustainable agriculture or creating a nationwide multimillion/billion dollar franchise. Anime is an artistic and creative pursuit. All you need is a pencil, a pen, some paper, a lot of investment of time and effort and study, and bam, you are able to create your own anime/manga/animeshit. Since the mid 1990s, I honestly don't get how fucking hard it is to realize that anime is like music or cooking or any other fucking craft on the planet.
With the weeaboos however, anime is a Japanese only craft by bullshit exoticism which can only be magically made by them and only by them. While I have my good experiences with fandom, I've noticed how much of a cargo cult like following the worst end of anime fandom is. When anime isn't being lauded for its historic significance of creative liberation and letting the world know that animation and sequential art overall can be a form of entertainment and creative expression with merit and integrity like any other, it is either merely praised as the end all be all manifestation of animation as a whole, a strawman example of why Japan is creatively liberated and better than any other place in the world for its products, or a simply "amusing" form of foreign entertainment that is a pick and choose buffet of "end product" as seen by outdated post 1980s cyberpunk William Gibson minded and Nietzsche worshipping current day tranny and SJW nerds.
Rather than being inspired to keep on to create animeshit out of one's inspiration and balance and equilibrium of creativity and enjoyment in its appreciation, its appreciation is always mostly material out west. This is fucking strange to me, because with anything crosscultural that travels borders and roots itself in another land, it is natural to see customs and aspects of their own that thrives far from its origin and helps to emerge its own identity. With anime, it's almost non existent outside of Japan. We see artists making anime shit, but they don't do much with their talents. There is a want to respect that anime comes from Japan, but there's no want to understand the spirit that goes into it. There is want to watch and enjoy it, but there is no want to relate and see parallels in that work to the world outside. Anime isn't shared by these assend dwellers by what you see in it and like about it, it's all about what's in and new and what you've bought and seen and are "in the community" and if you share the same mindset or else. This kind of shit is what breeds anime convention excesses, MeTooing voice actors like Weeb Wars, and longtime taste whoring parasites like THEM Anime Reviews and Anime News Network that think anime isn't "in" because "it's not sophisticated enough" than the fact that it was never made for their ugly pasty limpdick first world galaxy brained asses or anyone anywhere else exclusively or directly. Animeesque shit also gets me to raise an eye at it too, because that shit either is made by executive committee or by the same kind of assholes.
While out in Japan, while there are otakus, neets, and hikkikomori, an entire world, with a community as well as an industry of creators is existent. There is the capability to create anime shit and a thriving world out there for it. I've talked about this before, and I'll say it again, that this creativity is what helps to drive the finer boundaries between posers and attention whores from the actual fans and enjoyers. It fosters respect and creates reasonable necessitated social boundaries for safety and it breeds both examples and a world of competition, trial, and worth that actually helps direct its own direction by both fans and creators alike at its best. Now that is something to aspire to and be inspired by.
I honestly don't know how this mindset came about when anime hit the mainstream States side. I can get why one would have disdain towards the western/American animation/comics industry in general; letting censorship go its course than do anything about it would make one cringe to let such oppression have its way with you by hindsight, but if you didn't get out of anime's arrival that western animation/comics or constructive art of any kind could achieve the same lofty heights of liberation and expression and that it's a human effort than a simply Japanese/nationcentric effort, well, I think something's wrong with you.
Basically, Funko Pops are the lazy man's action figure, except unlike actual action figures which you can pose and play with, all Funko Pops can do is be a nice paperweight on your table while you're writing essays for college. That, combined with the MCU's over-popularity and the fact that CalArts cartoons are made for mentally-damaged spergs who think "representation" is a substitute for good storytelling, really goes to show why a lot of old-school nerds DESPISE Funko Pops, CalArts cartoons, and the MCU.Funkopops get shit because they're ugly bland and sterile pieces of plastic with no soul behind them, and because they were made popular when being into nerd and geekshit means to watch every MCU that comes out and think Thundercats Rawr and other CalArts shit are "making a statement". Skin care too, The Ordinary is popular to hoard for little autists and then whining on reddit for not knowing how to use it. There's a guide in the side bar in the sub and one on The Ordinary-site too.Ugh. They're bastardizing makeup too? I'm a dude and even I think this is excessive.
Did anyone ever follow up and see if that first guy actually played that Zelda?

Edit : What was the name of the Soy-Facial Expression thread we have, I think I discovered the origin of it.
Thank you, I was way off on that title.

With all of these 'rona restrictions in place, I can feel some of these items beginning to wiggle around in my brain. Fortunately for me, my 'consoom' hit when I bought three things on my steam wishlist during the Christmas sale, as opposed to my usual one. Pa Reprobate is miserly, and I inherited some of it, thank yehua.I think it's due to a mix of things but mainly;
- Having an empty void in their dead-end lives they need to fill
- Having so little to do in their NEET lives they start consooming just to pass the time
- Wanting to be part of a community but think owing same product = friend
- Wanting to appear rich and pretend they're better than the poor idiots
- Being too stupid to do basic maths/not having basic life skills
It was already devolving into MUH JUCEE!, MUH NIGS!, MUH TRADS! and so on. And the mods were being complete bumblefucks about it. I was there in it's final days and besides some cute posts about people displaying their home made farms, the rest was shit barely(if none at all) relevant to consumerism. It got banned because AHS can't stand differing opinions.
The. win revival is honestly shit, filled with tryhards and wannabe /pol/tards without any nuance.
Shame, because it was a legitimately good sub.
I think it's due to the amount of money you get on wellfare. You have no chance of buying a house or a car, or anything useful, and it's miserable as fuck on the dole so people just buy worthless shit as a pick me up, then it becomes a habbit I guess.Anyone else notice loads of people on welfare/benefits end up as consoomers?
I grew up on benefits with most of my family on benefits and nearly everyone I knew was on or had been on benefits. Nearly every single one was obsessed with consooming something.
One brother has posted soy faces with his new useless Pokemon, Nintendo or Skylander stuff. The other brother only owns clothes with brand names or costs a minimum of £40 and refuses to wear anything else. My Mum does that same with clothes, makeup, bags and perfume. Some friends can't cope when they find out I don't care about the newest series/games/film/useless waste of money everyone NEEDS to buy. One friend refused to talk to me for 2 hours after I told her I didn't care about Star Wars.
All these people spend a fortune of free money on useless junk then wonder why they don't have any money. They constantly ask to 'borrow' money then throw a fit when I refuse and try to explain budgeting and why I don't have loads of debt. Once they finish explaining I'm stupid for not buying the latest PRODUCT™ they complain it's the government's fault for not giving them enough money.
I think it's due to a mix of things but mainly;

I haven't consoomed much during all the lockdown BS, but I am looking at a few things with the mentality of "Well I haven't spent X, so I can actually afford this now". Not anything I need, but just stuff I want. I mean it's not like I can have hobbies like going to the gym, sports, etc. Endless lockdown, no wonder Amazon is doing so well. With all of these 'rona restrictions in place, I can feel some of these items beginning to wiggle around in my brain. Fortunately for me, my 'consoom' hit when I bought three things on my steam wishlist during the Christmas sale, as opposed to my usual one. I'll take this a step further to Japan in general. Between Anime and Video Games, there's a hell of a lot of people out there that have essentially fetishized the whole country. Literally, they treat it as this amazing promised land for nerds and wacky things. Case in point: All these stupid Japan channels on youtube that cover the most mundane things imaginable as if they're fine art.Apologies if I derail the thread from the funco pop discussion, but its about damn time a thread like this comes to into being. This concludes my sperging on anime shit. We now continue to our regular sperging on funko pops and the nature of consuum versus actual collecting.
Funkopops get shit because they're ugly bland and sterile pieces of plastic with no soul behind them, and because they were made popular when being into nerd and geekshit means to watch every MCU that comes out and think Thundercats Rawr and other CalArts shit are "making a statement".
