The consumerism in the custom mechanical keyboard community is out of control. They spend hundreds of dollars on expensive keycaps, switches, and cables, and see their keyboards as flashy decorations they hoard more and more of, not tools they use every day. And then there's the social pressure to keep consooming in the community because of limited run keycaps and switches. You'll see these keyboard enthusiasts talking about how they had to get in on a group buy for new keycaps just because of FOMO (fear of missing out). And when they buy new keycaps, oops might as well buy new everything else to make another board.

Until this thread existed, I had no idea people were obsessed with those things to that extent.

I'll probably regret asking this, but what else has a fanatical consoomerist following?

Some of these guys could be collecting antique toys and other things like old comic books that aren't being sold anymore and therefore have almost nothing to do with the consumption machine pushing down worthless crap down people's throats.

What makes you think all collectors just blindly go into debt over their hobby? For that matter, what's wrong with collecting? Sometimes, it's fun. Also sometimes, people actually preserve interesting cultural material. Put another way, there's nothing wrong with having your own private museum or library. Sure, there's people who go overboard like some of the people featured in this thread but that's not every collector.

Not really. CONSOOMERS usually follow a trend and collect things while they're hot and new. Collectors usually slowly buy up old shit when they can afford it. There's a difference. One is following a trend, the other is doing it for their own personal enjoyment regardless of trends happening around him.

That's right. It can also be that you actually appreciate the activity or field of interest. Just liking it doesn't mean you must or feel the need to buy everything related to that topic. Everyone's collection is different. Everyone has their own standards and motives for collecting whatever it is they collect.

All of these are probably 100$+ keyboards if not more. I bought a 20$ mechy keyboard with cherry blue clones a few years ago and got some decent keycaps for it, and I haven't gotten another keyboard since. I've had practically no issues with the thing. How do any of these guys justify spending so much money on so many different keysets they'll never even use? It's completely a hoarder's mentality with an excuse that "at least they're practical items". Except how the hell do you even use this?

On one hand, I see your point. It seems crazy to constantly spend money on something like that just to say you have every possible keyboard design. You've got to draw the line somewhere and not be impulsive and go overboard. This seems weird to me, because, if it wasn't already obvious based on my replies, I also have collections of my own. However, I don't feel the need to constantly expand on what I have or spend exorbiant amounts of money to complete them because I'm content with what I have.

For example, I have a collection of old Mad Magazines. I don't go out of my way to buy Mad merchandise or memorabilia. I don't spend money to buy rare issues and so on. On top of that, I actually read them too because I like the old-school Mad Magazines. I could never imagine going broke because I must absolutely have a rare issue that's out of print. So that's where I'm coming from on my perspective on collecting.

Also one thing I neglected to mention: mechanical keyboards also scratch that consoomer itch because of all the pop culture themed keycap sets. Every single week on the subreddit someone posts a picture of their board with Darling in the Franxx Zero Two keycaps, and that anime isn't even popular anymore.

Heck, it could also be the start of your very own library. Like say, a collection of Star Wars comics, of books about certain topics like the Crusades, or books about political correctness. That would actually be of service to others if you opened up your own library in the future with that stuff.

I have a collection of toys from different science fiction series. It doesn't mean I want to collect every Gundam and Transformer I find, but those that I do personally like, I snatch up.
