I’m inclined to believe that exposure to certain things at specific times in a child’s life, maybe in combination with a lack of friends (so an ostracized child who spends a lot of their late childhood around a dog or dogs maybe, as an example), could wind up developing zoophilia. I don’t think it’s just one thing but a combination of things. And not necessarily those ones I mentioned but literally anything else.I remember reading at some point that certain paraphilias such as pedophilia could potentially be caused by a metaphorical 'miswiring' in the brain that causes it to activate a sexual response to children rather than a nurturing response (honestly I feel like this explanation is complete bullshit given how most offenders have a sadistic streak a mile wide with their victims but I digress)
I think where it tips into an actual problem (where it goes from someone who just has a problematic attraction that can be managed or ignored, to someone who is trying to engage in it or believes it’s ok) is when you have someone who has other issues on top of it, hence why so frequently you see zoophiles who are also pedophiles or have really twisted opinions or interests. There could already be something broken in there that zoophilia just kind of was a symptom of, or it could be the zoophilia existed there first but the symptoms of a deeper problem were also bubbling below the surface.
At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter because sick fucks don’t deserve rights, but it’s interesting to think about why it’s never just “kind of bad” (like someone saying they have an attraction and then don’t act on it ever), it’s always “I want to fuck dogs and I’m not wrong or bad for feeling that way. Also I like kids too.” Probably because people who are zoophiles or pedophiles and don’t want to act on it or give the attraction any importance in their lives don’t make it their entire personality or reason for being online and instead seek therapy. But I could be talking out of my ass, so my apologies if this whole ramble is autistic.
