Did Styx ever take you up on your offer to help him learn about the fediverse? Maybe I'm confusing things, but I'm pretty sure he was one of the people heavily into Gab and Parler. All he has left is Bitchute and the mercy of his Youtube overlords.
I don't know if Phil has shit luck, God-tier luck or some kind of karmic balance where he fucks up and is saved from the consequences. I hope this has no impact, it would be very anticlimactic.

I hope gab gets back up and running, then the smooth brains on the left wont realise the fediverse exists.
They already know though. I thought the fediverse had a large commie population?
Personally I still don't understand the fediverse well enough to really make use of it, but I do like the idea of a decentralized internet.

As time goes on I get more and more convinced that Gab and other "Twitter alternatives" are just a massive honey pot.
"Hey come use our website its great :)"
"WHOOPSIE looks like we have a nazi problem, and if you use this site you'll be branded a nazi"
"Nah but it's cool come hang out on, give us your personal info :)"
"WHOOPSIE looks like we've been hacked and someone stole all your info"
"Okay that was a big fuck up but we sweat it won't happen again :)"
"WHOOPSIE looks like some tranny demon hackers took our site down"

He's stuck with it despite payment processor deplatforming and the destruction of his public reputation, it is the biggest alt tech site on the Internet outside dying Parler.

Torba isn't evil, he's just retarded.
Here's the thing: most would say "well that sucks" and leave Torba to his fate. These hackers won't stop until Torba is executed for the crime of being an outspoken MAGA man. And they may actually get their scalp. They could easily just show how idiotic Torba is and break it down in a way that isn't completely bogged down in technical shit....but their hate boner for him and people like him just can't leave a good enough situation for the target of their ire alone.

Torba is a master of always doing the wrong thing every step of the way.
Ehh not when it comes to refusing to pay in situations like this. The last thing you want to do is show you're willing to accept being extorted. If you do that it won't end there

It was hilarious watching Torba downplay this as much as possible and sperg about conservatism to hide his tracks, 8 bitcoins is only 414k USD, can he really not afford that?
Like I said, only idiots pay when they're being extorted. It'll just lead to it happening again and again and demanding more money out of you until you can't or won't give in to their demands anymore. At which point you're right back where you started anyway, only with that much less money in your pocket

That said, did babylon bee get hacked as well to post that or something? Otherwise whoever runs that site is a fucking idiot for publicly admitting an extortion attempt. That is how you get the feds knocking on your door

Weird. I wonder if Gab has the same problem as Parler, not deleting accounts but just marking them as deleted. Troy Hunt thinks the lack of email addresses might be due to how the data was dumped.
Its worth mentioning that isn't a problem as much as it is an industry standard, and in plenty of places a legal requirement, in that companies are generally required to retain account information for sites like that for legal purposes in case some kind of incident happens like terrorism or pedo rings or whatever illegal shit, so its available to law enforcement . Most sites just flag and deactivate accounts rather than separately archiving the data and eliminating the account entirely as its easier to implement and less chance of ever being accused of fucking with the data later on. I found this particular bit of information out when I was doing prep work for building a dating site as a side project and had a talk with a couple lawyers about it

Fuck it's finally the Demon Hackers that the Bible foretold of?

34 Yet again I looked upon the information superhighway of fire, and I saw there a sleazy grifter who was being dragged along, immersed up to the knees. And Temeluchus came with a great hacking with which he pierced the scam of that sleazy grifter.

I signed up to Gab with a throwaway email and password specifically because Torba is a sped. Ended up leaving it not a week later because the servers are dogshit. Looks like I was right to do so.

Is it like an ego thing that makes him do this? He wants to like build everything from a social media site to a browser (shitty fork of Brave that's outdated) to a YouTube alternative. The perfect is the enemy of the good - just host a fediverse node, use LBRY and set up a crypto wallet like a normal internet sperg.

To be fair, multiple Gab devs have told me that federation was responsible for a lot of performance issues at their size, and that along with general insularity were the deciding factors in ditching it. You can believe that or not, but really no one knows because no one else hosts a server as big as they are.

Agree with the rest though. Their philosophy that you have to build literally everything yourself is misguided. They waste a lot of time trying to re-invent things that already exist and the fact that they pawn off their browser despite never maintaining it would be suable in a just world.

Gab's new CTO Fosco used to be a Facebook Software Engineer. Shouldn't he understand basic code auditing?

Gab should really take its time, there's no rush to getting back online. Even if they're offline for a week, it's worth it in the long run if they can finally patch up their security.
