Also 20k sounds like a lot but it really isn't for running a huge property like the Tranch. They will blow through it in no time.

Probably part of it. They also no longer have the structure that the military provides, feel like they've lost the community they once belonged in (even though there are tons of veteran organizations), didn't develop any useful skills to find gainful employment outside of there, and passed the psych analysis by the skin of their teeth.

They're our new version of Vietnam vets coming home to become homeless alcoholics and heroin fiends.

There's a saying that "no soldier is unwounded" implying that even if I didn't get a leg blown off that my service has left some sort of trauma on my psyche.

PL: I don't agree as I see everything good or bad that happened to me in uniform having a net positive on my life, BUT I can say that leaving does result in a void. You go from having a clear identity and network to just being another person in the "real world".

Most vets deal and process with this just fine. There are plenty of resources and groups avaliable BUT if you already had issues before the military like Penny then I could see this leading to trooning.

Basically: Prior unaddressed issues + combat/service + losing military identity = filling void with trooning.

They lowered standards after 9-11. Basically any tattooed drunk jabroni can get in now. And a lot of people join for the wrong reasons, which makes the aftermath way harder on them.

Realistically, how many big bad gun-toting antifash troons are they gonna have actually show up to middle-of-nowhere Colorado to point guns at armed fascists in the middle of a pandemic? Not many. Either because it's too far, or because waaah covid, or because it's fun to larp as a tough man on the internet but the thought of actually getting shot is a bit scawwy.

So you just send the three people that showed up out for patrol with Bonnie, and oh look, the fascists only showed up on Penny's patrol, whoops, haha!
