A lot of people started going into healthcare for mostly monetary reasons at astounding rates since the 2008 crash and even more recently. There was actually a 20% bump in applications this past cycle. Now, a lot of those people are normal, but a lot of others are nuts or just blatantly only concerned about their career and they manage to do fairly well in spite of that.

If you care about your friend, tell her the truth: We are wonderfully and fearfully made. She does not need to gain a painful wound for a subpar sex life. An atypical sex life is not a bad sex life, but a life with painful and non-functional genitals is a terrible life. She is loved. She is perfect as she is. She is precious and valued. She needs therapy, not years of pain and sadness. There's a world of difference between hormones and dissecting genitals.

Back then you had people mainstream back then speaking out on how lobotomies and such failed and were inhumane and cruel, whereas now the same mainstream is saying it's inhumane and cruel if you don't have the procedure.

It was seen in enough of a favorable light that the Kennedy family had it done to one of their own.

One of the hallmarks of people with slightly above average intelligence yet absolutely no wisdom is, and always has been, a willingness to jump on any bandwagon that promises to be a fast pass to The Future, and this happens a lot in the medical world.

Any time someone claims to have invented a new procedure that's going to revolutionize the world, pseuds attach themselves to it without spending one second thinking critically. They want to be able to say they were the first ones to take the first bold step into the future. There's no time to run the numbers, because by the time they've done that they're not First any more, and to them, being First is more important than anything, because it means they were smarter than everyone else.

And if everything goes horribly wrong? Nobody remembers. Nobody takes them to task for it. And so they do it again at the next opportunity. What happened to all the people who supported the lobotomy? Nothing. What happened to the Nobel Prize committee after they gave Dr. Moniz the prize? Nothing. In fact, they still defend that decision to this day. What happened to the doctors who cheered as Dr. Cotton tore out patients' organs for no medically sound reason? Nothing.

The fact that she performs literally every trans surgery should be a massive warning sign. If you're ever going for plastic surgery, the first advice you're given is to find someone reputable who specialises in that specific discipline, who is well known to be fantastic at that one surgery. Even on Botched they have one guy do the noses and one guy do the tits. The fact that she does them all just seems very shady to me.

Clerkships/interviews. Applicants are known to dump 3 or 4k on flights and prep for this.

Residency. 100 hours a week/36k a year! Good news! You're making money now. But it will most likely clock out to be less than minimum wage and you only have 4-8 years to go

In your late 30s if you started early, you might be making your post-residency salary of like 190k which isn't all that generous considering debt and your taxes. Your bank account is basically going to be red until you are an attending physician.

God forbid you don't match into residency. Like, god fucking forbid.

Yeah, scholarships and grants exist. Until they don't.

There are perfectly good doctors who do both rhinoplasty and breast lifts/augmentations. What's more concerning is that it's a mashup of plastics and uro. They're pretty different areas and both fields are going to have different focuses and training. You wouldn't go to a psychiatrist for a bowel obstruction.
