Not saying it's all that great of an idea in a vacuum but it's not like the science, especially biology, market is a better alternative. A lot of entry level research associate positions are being gobbled up by master's degrees who went back to get that degree because they couldn't find anything, and these are positions paying anywhere from 22 to 30 dollars an hour with no real benefits in high cost of living areas. Even people with PhDs are struggling.Unless you come from old money or are a legacy med student, going into medicine for the money is a horrible idea.
Although, I will say that I don't think this current trend in applications will continue. My local hospital is apparently getting the highest amount of applications it has ever gotten for an attending position in Emergency Medicine. We aren't even that great of an area and nothing has changed all that much in the past few years.
