The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

The Princess Diaries thing is true, though.
For a woman who seems to be cribbing notes from The Crown, Meghan must’ve missed the Diana-centric episide this past season where Di get extensive princess training— from her own grandmother no less, a royal lady-in-waiting.

Her passport bullshit, which has now been utterly debunked (she travelled for leisure about a dozen times outside the UK during the time she claimed she couldn’t), was most likely taken from Charlene of Monaco, the wife of Albert. Charlene, about to marry cad Albert, supposedly got cold feet but was prevented from leaving the country, which included confiscating her passport.

That picture of her at 15 in front of buckingham palace makes her look paler than I am, and I make paper look tanned.

It's just not credible that she didn't understand what she was letting herself in for. What she overestimated was her ability to become the star of the show on her own terms. She got her hooks into Harry efficiently enough. She had achieved pretty much everything else she set out to, and fought her way up in the US media, bagged Harry, so why not take over the British Royal Family, a bunch of quaint dodderers living in a previous century and turn it into something a lot more hip? Shouldn't be too hard.

Unfortunately, being an American actress, she totally misunderstood the power dynamic and the British public. The dignified thing to do if she was sincere was to agree with the Royal Family that they had to be out of it and agree reasonable terms on which to do that. Instead, she launches on a media war (just as the saintly Diana did) without apparently realising that that strategy cuts both ways. The longer it goes on, the less dignified it becomes, the more most of the UK public will detest her, the more the media will attack her (not because she is a woman, not because she is on the ethnic spectrum, but because that's what their customers want to hear) and the more dimwitted and helpless Harry looks.

Yeah, that's another load of nonsense.

Her passport and driving licence were removed so that she could have her name changed to her married name. It is protocol for passports to be kept safe and then handed to the person in a file with relevant briefing notes on the tarmac before boarding a plane. Driver's licenses are never kept as the royals sometimes drive themselves. There are no keys to be taken away as the various residences have gates / guard houses so keys aren't used.

Buckingham Palace are right not to refute her lies line-by-line. Their motto has always been "never complain; never explain". Smeggy, liar that she is, knows this.

Harry is no better. That idiot comment about putting Archie (what kind of stupid name is that? It's a dog's name or, if you are fan of Don Marquis's poetry, the name of a cockroach) in a basket on the back of his bike. There are photographs of Prince Charles riding around with Harry on the back of a bike.

One thing I will say, though, I've heard through the grape vine: Smeggy was tearful for a lot of the time. But not because she was badly treated. Quite the reverse - people bent over backwards to accommodate her but it was never enough. She had rages because she wanted to do things her way and was told "no". This upset her, hence the tears and the emails to HR complaining about staff. She also wanted the palace communications team to go after negative media stories and, again, was told that it wasn't going to happen. This was the cue for more tears and meltdowns.

Basically, Smeg acted like a spoilt child who threw tantrums because she didn't get her way. The Oprah interview was her way of getting revenge.

And also, say what you will about everything else around her, the causes Diana took up after everything was said and done were actually thoughtful. AIDS at its zenith and landmines killing children are far better things to advocate for than writing pithy statements on bananas with a goddamn sharpie.

Re: the racist member of the royal family is. I know who it is generally considered to be. The person is a very minor member who most people wouldn't be able to identify in a line-up. They have form for being arrogant and obnoxious.

Re: the alleged comments about race. This is going to be very disappointing but all that anyone backstairs has chatted about is who the baby is going to resemble / whose coloring it is going to have. Very standard stuff.

There's more but I'm not comfortable going into a lot of detail.

Going back a generation or so: Edwina Mountbatten (wife of Charles's beloved uncle / father figure) had an affair with Nehru.
Is it the one who wore the Blackamoor (sp) brooch at some function where Megan was present? Her name escapes me at the moment.

Edit: Ninja'ed again!

If you're in a serious relationship with someone from a different country, even if they're not royalty, you'd think it'd be common sense to go out of your way to learn at least the basics of that country regardless. Jesus Meghan, it's not that hard.

It's not just if you're in a relationship. There is a football player here who's lived his whole life in another country but was eventually called to play for our national team, something he had asked to do many times. He doesn't yet know the language well and was just getting used to our customs, but he knew that media would make a big scandal if he wasn't singing the national anthem with the others at the start of the match. So, he learned it, even if he didn't know the meaning of all the words and was singing it along the rest of players.

What's Meghan's excuse? The anthem is even in her own language. And she, someone who's worked in Hollywood for years, should know well that image counts. Is a football players smarter than Meghan? Yes, yes it is.

Y'all niggas don't understand how hard is it to type 'bongland queen theme song', 'is stabbing an official greeting in the uk' and 'basic etiquette for yacht whores' and then read it in English, when your native language is English.

Not sure if already posted, but even then, it bears repeating.
Times counter status: every single one.
