This is the problem. It sounds like he DOESN'T want to be a gunsmith anymore. At the end of the day gunsmithing is a service and 80% of the time it's remedial tasks. All he want's to do want's to finger bang MP40s.9 months? He allowed himself to be pressurised into sending it out early?
Look I get that Novak is a talented guy, but if you take money from someone to do a Job, you're entering into a contract. I get the impression that he thought that a low end job was a waste of his time.... but then he shouldn't have taken the job. The guy that gave it to him, probably thought he was doing him a favour by giving him work.
Also the fact that Novak did the job via an intermediary gun shop, that is now out of business... is well..
If he's a professional gunsmith, he shouldn't be making videos whinging at customers, saying he regrets doing the work. However if he's a gifted amateur looking to keep himself occupied during retirement, it kind of makes sense.
I'm not a huge fan of this whole 'apprentice' routine, where a busy workplace takes on unpaid or underpaid, low skilled workers. It's usually done for the wrong reason and ends badly. If he is too busy for an apprentice, get an office assistant. His hours should be hands on guns and nothing else.
Despite how much people like to moralize about how war affects the people fighting they also like to ignore that when you can get epic reddit karmaMy main problem with Atun-Shei and people who make similar arguments trying to dunk on the south, is that they tend to lack any sense of humanity. Little respect is given to the cultural consequences of the south fighting the most horrific industrial war that America had seen, and fighting it in their own back yard.
You can make an academic or snarky moral argument about how much worse the evils of slavery and Jim Crow were, and you can nitpick about the historical details that pro-Confederacy types tend to fixate on as a coping mechanism, but people tend to make the mistake of not remembering that they’re usually talking to people whose views were, generations ago, shaped by a culture who fought and died and suffered personally. They wanted those sacrifices to mean something, they typically understand that slavery is wrong, but they look at their ancestors and want to find some way to justify the suffering and celebrate the quality human traits where they can be found. Stonewall Jackson isn’t revered for what he fought for, but how he fought.
I’ve noticed this when visiting parts of the south that paid a direct toll for the war, the confederate iconography tends to be more open and more part of the culture. You can try to shame them all you want from a modern perspective of presentism, but you’re not going to win any hearts and minds if you ignore the fact that their culture took root back when there were still people around who had their farms burned, their daughters raped and their sons murdered. A decade of harsh winters starving in Shenandoah or Savannah, experienced first hand, is going to shape the post-war culture and if you try to engage with people from those cultures without acknowledging that, then you’re doing it more for your own sense of self-superiority than you are for any real attempt to find common ground or change people’s minds. That very real, very human pain tends to supersede a the more distant morality of overall conflict.
That plus when you strip away the fact that now people understand that slavery and racism are fucking wrong, the Civil war becomes a narrative of rural life versus urban imperialism. Can you take a wild fucking guess as to why that message might still resonate with people today, oh educated urbanites constantly showing your disdain and ridiculing rural culture? And that’s when you’re not actively trying to snuff it out.
People like Atun who build their whole historically narrative about the Civil War based on a modern sense of empathy for the very real suffering of the slaves and post-war African American struggles ironically tend to show little empathy for the people who actually fought it, and who are degraded and dismissed as racists for trying to find some modern angle to justify what they see as heroism from people with whom they share a culture.
As I've mentioned before, it goes the opposite way now too; young guys walk in with fucking reams of paper qualifications & test scores & expect to immediately skip straight to master-level work, along with free tools & the keys to the shop.I'm not a huge fan of this whole 'apprentice' routine, where a busy workplace takes on unpaid or underpaid, low skilled workers. It's usually done for the wrong reason and ends badly.
Yeah, when their channel blew up, his regular apprentice got roped into doing a lot of things other than gunsmithing. I think he's moved on now & dunno if they've tried to hire anyone else, but they're probably constantly swamped now with offers, regardless. I'm sure most of them are mint.He needs a skilled general machinist, that he can give detailed tasks to without constantly checking his work. Someone used to working in a small workshop would also be able to answer the phone, do basic paperwork etc.
If I remember right Novak did a video a couple of years ago where he complained about going through multiple different apprentices, and complaining about modern youth. It could just be that Novak has no ability to train an apprentice.
If he mentored a junior sailor in the navy, then by the time that sailor came on board, he had already gone through trade school, so what was required was a process of guiding them through gaining experience, not teaching basic tasks. Also that junior sailor would be getting paid, which tends to affect general attitude.
Karl prefers to avoid discussing politics unless they are of the sort likely to gain him accolades from his growing Commie fanbase. How is Karl coping with the two gun control bills that were just introduced? Ignoring it?
Based dementia man is supporting them so he has to like them. How is Karl coping with the two gun control bills that were just introduced? Ignoring it?
Karl is silent, Tacticool BF is silent, Deviant Ollam is afraid of state's rights.(archive)How is Karl coping with the two gun control bills that were just introduced? Ignoring it?
Lol of course Ollam is getting antsy when states actually consider standing up to the feds, which is the most American thing they can do. Guess that leftist tough talk was all an act.Karl is silent, Tacticool BF is silent, Deviant Ollam is afraid of state's rights.(archive)
Ian is silent too....but Ian is generally quite consistently silent about politics overall.Karl is silent, Tacticool BF is silent, Deviant Ollam is afraid of state's rights.(archive)
I think Karl's attitude has always been to help build support for the second amendment among groups that wouldn't otherwise support it. Which isn't a bad idea. Atun Shei's audience are all leftie types and in fairness he did his best to promote gun rights to them.Ian is silent too....but Ian is generally quite consistently silent about politics overall.
Karl meanwhile does overtly political stuff like bend the knee to BLM and has actually talked about the importance of firearms to various minority groups.....but can’t be bothered to address potential national infringements on gun rights that affect everyone. I’m not saying I think Karl is secretly in favor of the bills either, but he exhibits some odd inconsistencies when it comes to what he’s willing to stick his neck out for.
Even other very apolitical firearms-focused channels like Nine Hole Reviews have gone out of their way to make statements against the latest anti-gun bills.
But they don't even care about gun rights and never would, because they want to be the only ones who can own guns in the first place.I think Karl's attitude has always been to help build support for the second amendment among groups that wouldn't otherwise support it. Which isn't a bad idea. Atun Shei's audience are all leftie types and in fairness he did his best to promote gun rights to them.
Good. But he might want to mention “oh hey, all you new 2A supporters out there and 2A fence-sitters, there’s some anti-gun legislation moving through congress, and this is why it’s bad......”I think Karl's attitude has always been to help build support for the second amendment among groups that wouldn't otherwise support it. Which isn't a bad idea. Atun Shei's audience are all leftie types and in fairness he did his best to promote gun rights to them.
Why would he? They both have the same politics. Ian just doesn't let his show like Karl because Ian probably enjoys being a cult figure and the money it brings.Looks like Ian isn’t really distancing himself from Karl. His latest Instagram post includes him. I really had hope for Ian to ditch the sperg.
Ian hasn't let his politics show since before he was wildly popular- I think he's doing the smart thing, both for business and for the documentary nature of his videos. Why would he?
