I mean I guess you could argue that and the first one are what catapulted the series into the cash cow that it is today. But then that’s also ignoring games like counter strike, quake etc that no doubt stole a lot of time from young males a decade before call of duty really started taking off

This is true, CoD4: Modern Warfare exploded and no one was expecting it to become that huge. It didn't get the cover in Edge, did not get a spread, it got scheduled for a one page review further back in the magazine. It was just another Call of Duty, good games, but it was already an annual series at that point(1 in 2003, 2 in 2005, 3 in 2006, 4 in 2007) so how different can it be?
