It seems there are people trying to troll him, but when I look at his profile very few people actually comment on the stuff he posts (other than in r/waifuism) So people are probably messing with on him on discord/pm's or something.

I didn't think her work would be such a shameless Splatoon rip-off and self-insert. I really thought she'd at least try to disguise her work a little bit. This is all OBVIOUSLY so... her. I'm reading through the book and it's full of specific details from her Tumblr and Reddit posts. Barely changed at all from the "source".

I've never seen someone who uses the word "comfort character" who actually believes they're in a relationship with the character, to be honest. It seems more like a dumb casual Tumblr thing.

I stand by the idea that it's just the game attracting weird people cuz it's a weird game. A game where you play as a crossdresser manchild* using a mix of genuine weapons and toys to kill things just sounds like the kind of thing to attract nutjobs.
But also Capcom Fanboys sounds really plausible.
* I would like to reiterate - this is canonical stuff and not just me saying mean words for the sake of it.

It's used in a same way "waifu" is. Most people consider "waifu" as a casual thing, with some outliers who are dead serious about it. Same with "comfort character". Except since "comfort character" is often tied with mental health discourse, the craziness manifests as self-entitlement rather than delusion.

From what I've gathered I think he's genuinely getting contacted but you never know. He responds to a lot of "troll posts" in r/waifuism so that probably prompts people to poke him further. Though he talks about being catfished so idk maybe someone pretended to be Chuck Greene in his dms or something.
Edit:
I can't do quotes on mobile but in regards to the what does frank west and chuck Greene have to do with suicide- there are suicidal survivors they save in game but not by encouraging neck roping lmao
