I think you take other another country's propaganda at face value. For one, the fanatical mullah control over Iran is not as tight as you might think, even less with their younger population. Khomeni got into power becuase he hijacked the revolution and after that, the war with Iraq made it so that the Iranian population cared more about the literal enemy at their border than their batshit leader. Since relative peace has returned to Iran, and the scummier actions of the government have surfaced (such as spending millions of Hezbollah instead of their own population), disatisfaction with the goverment has surged. A nuke to America would mean that they would get blown 50 times harder than Darius III at Guagamela. America would survive one or even two nukes, as much of a tragedy it would be; Iran would not survive 100. At then of the day, nuking somebody else means you get nuked harder in return.

But the question is: How much blowback would you be willing to take? If Iran hates America even 1/10th as much as they say they do, blowback from nuking the US is just "well, at least THe Great Satan has been vanquished. Time to go and enjoy my 72 virgins".

Because someone that is even vaguely informed about current events knows that the US is currently withdrawing form most of the world and Iran has a real chance of becoming a ME power. A chance they're not going to waste with some petty fanatical bullshit. And if not them, certainly their population, their hold of which, as I said, is on shaky ground.

5. They are energy dependant on the ME and on US naval protection to get that energy.
