It's more a warning about attempting to build an earthship from old tyres, but has a couple of relevant points:
Structures Suitable for Mountain Living
If you are thinking of putting a mobile home, metal shed, travel trailer, or similar structure on your property, you may want to reconsider. The Colorado winds have blown apart many of these structures on CRAMRA, creating a junk pile. High quality construction is highly recommended.
Junk
Keeping junk of any kind on your property is a violation of CRAMRA covenants. Owners will be responsible for the cost of its removal. They may also face fines and attorney fees if they fail to remove it. Keep CRAMRA beautiful, eliminate junk!
Waste Tires and Tire Houses ("Earth Ships")
Waste tires are considered to be hazardous waste by the State of Colorado. When you have your tires changed on your vehicle, tractor, or other equipment, leave the old tires with the tire store or mechanic where they can be properly recycled. Do not accept old tires from others and collect them on your property.
We strongly discourage attempting to build houses using waste tires. Think about how much structural integrity there is in a stack of tires. Is it hard to push over? Is it hard to push over even if filled with dirt? There is no reason to build your house out of trash. Doing so will not help the environment. If you must live partly underground, use well formed concrete walls.
Our experience on CRAMRA with tire houses is a bad one. Your best case scenario is that you end up with an abandoned project and a very expensive cleanup. Your lot is likely to be identified as a junk lot and you may face legal action.
Yes you will see hundreds of pretty pictures online of tire houses. Many of these were produced by a cult in New Mexico where volunteers pay to become free labor for the cult. Building a tire house is much more labor intensive than proven construction practices so unpaid labor, a large budget, or years of hard labor on your own with nothing else to do are the only ways to build one. This is one reason for the high failure rate. No one is very proud of these failures so you don't see them posted online.
If you are the one out of a 1000 to succeed, you may spends years and a lot of money building your tire house to completion only to learn it is very uncomfortable to live in and abandon it then.
Worst case scenario is you die from radon.

Radon Hazards of Subterranean Living
In pioneer days people sometimes lived in dugouts as temporary housing. However, they moved above ground as soon as possible. Then in more recent decades people tried berm houses. It promised reduced heating and cooling costs. But that never caught on either and people moved out of their experimental houses. Perhaps people have a natural inclination towards more sunlight and what's good for them.
Living subterranean or semi-subterranean, as in a tire house, can actually be deadly. This is due to radioactive radon exposure. The entire state of Colorado is a high risk radon zone. If you want to live underground, there are better places to do it.
