I'm not a social worker, but the ones I see spend a huge chunk of their time filling out official forms and faxing them, possibly more of that than the "talking to clients/making phonecalls to other professionals on behalf of clients." Documentation and filing documentation should be her strong suit; this isn't like finding evidence for a court case, it's just "yes I would like one [1] name change please." Her situation is like getting to the end of a vet tech degree and only then realizing that you're allergic to dogs; something should have come up sooner.

You're right, of course: I forgot that one can never underestimate the abilities of a cow. When all of this crop of failsons and faildaughters' supporting parents start to die off, it'll be interesting to see what happens, especially if it's widespread enough to be a slow wave of elderly orphans.

I'm sure some people change their first name for healthy reasons outside of estrangement/cultural assimilation/witness protection, but tbh I've never met one. I had a different legal name for almost a decade and it never meant what I needed it to mean because it was an attempt to "start fresh" that only covered up bigger issues. There's no quick fix for self-loathing or an identity crisis.

Anyways, I’m certain Staph is getting the quality of service she’s paying for. Any student with any ambition or smarts is going to pick a much more interesting and challenging case. Also, those law students are going to get a taste of what a shitty entitled client acts like, but that’s always a good thing for aspiring lawyers to know.

She's not even going for ambiguous "Non-binary" names. She's choosing clearly female names that she just likes better than her birth name for arbitrary reasons ("I like plants so I'm Yarrow now!"). Even if she wasn't just pretending this would be really dumb.

What I'm curious about is whether her parents really meant that she just has to wait to change her name later on, or if they gave her an ultimatum (change her name and move out, or stay with them and keep her real one) and then backpedaled after she had to go to the hospital. Either way, Stephanie certainly seems satisfied now.

I know this is nothing new with Steph, but I just can't get over how selfish and spoiled she is. A lot of her arguments with parents seem to end up in these kinds of situations, with one or both of them trying desperately to calm her down when she doesn't get her way, because otherwise they can't guarantee she won't have a violent tantrum that will culminate in aggression (attacking her mom, screaming at her dad) or self-destructive behavior (like her "suicide attempts"). Her parents are both elderly retirees, her mother is sick with cancer, and they still have to walk around on eggshells all the time so that Stephanie doesn't terrorize them with her juvenile bullshit. What a retirement.

I wonder sometimes how much more of her they can tolerate, because it's not likely to get any better from this point.
