I felt similar to how you are feeling before the trial. I saw strictly the footage of Floyd on the ground crying for his mom saying he can’t breathe.. and I thought “legally this is at least manslaughter”. I couldn’t even watch the whole thing at first.

then I saw his previous arrest of him saying he can’t breathe

then I saw him sobbing saying he can’t breathe while they’re trying to get him in the car while I witness says he was foaming at the mouth

THEN I looked closer at the video where Derek is “kneeling on his neck” while you can see George be able to move his head around

Hearing testimony that he had indications of ODing (not his first time) while yelling he can’t breathe (even while cops offer to get him some air in a rolled down window) makes me believe there is more at play here than police negligence. Police are not paramedics. And all they can do is keep a subject subdued until help arrives. Could things have been differently? Sure. On both ends. Do I think there was any intent behind killing George? No

They should not have waited to call the ambulance for even one second when he said he could not breath faking or not and 5 cops weight on a person is a very good indicator that misconduct was above helping him.

For a couple of reasons:

1. appealing is way harder for bench trials, as far as appeals courts being less likely to overturn a verdict it a judge finds guilt or innocence as opposed to a jury

2. IIRC if you request a bench trial, you basically are putting your life in the hand of a single person and you never know which way they'll land. Jury trials gives you the hope of at least one holdout whereas you have to be dead certain you'll draw a judge that will rule favorably on you and even then, pray something doesn't happen and the judge withdraws at the last second and is replaced with someone else who will be prejudiced against you.

3. and finally, in some states judges are elected not selected by higher ups in state government, which means that you might end up with a judge who will convict you solely to get re-elected.

The sole reason Black Lives Matter continues to exist (other than corporate sponsorship) is because the consequences of shooting black rioters outweighs the consequences of just allowing them burn down their own neighborhoods.
