I think we talked about this like a year ago, but yeah it can suck when someone is just dicking around in a game you're trying to enjoy unironically.
The obvious solution being not to play with that person.

But Lily being a joyless turd, she concludes that the bard class in it's entirety is for annoying sex-starved faggots (I don't think she realized what this said about her circle of friends). And knowing Lily's policy of "No chores, instant results", she probably tried to brute force her way through most obstacles. Because fantastical solutions in a fantasy setting is redundant.

Lily I don't know if my comment got caught in the spam filter on your Steven Universe video or if you deleted it, but I won't assume bad faith since you said that you'd allow comments critical of your video, at least with proper arguments and points.

However I did have a big problem with the video. I've copy pasted my comment below.


I have serious issues with the racism segment of this video:
- I was going to write something very long about Bismuth's representation, but you said it yourself at 1:05:47 that this was fixed with the follow-up episode (S5E22) to Bismuth's introduction (S3E20/21) and that it was a matter of missing context. So clearly this isn't because of Sugar being racist; it's an issue with how the context was delivered. It belongs under the pacing category or something, because it was only relevant when the show was still airing and a retrospective view of it does not yield the same conclusion.

- Sugalite's section is just blatantly wrong.
It's stated and shown many times in the show that the forms of fusions are heavily dictated by the personalities and relationship of the gems involved in the fusion. A very good example of this is Malachite, which draws from the fact Jasper literally can only think about fighting and their relationship draws very strong allegories to an abusive relationship (S3E15). Sugalite's form and personality is even explained by Garnet (S02E10), quoted as saying "[Garnet] can be brash, [Amethyst] can be reckless, and [they] can both get carried away". It has nothing to do with racial coding; and that argument falls apart even further because you said you don't even know what coding Amethyst is. I could find lots of people claiming that Amethyst was coded Black/Latino, however never any reasons why.

You saying Nicki Minaj being offended by Sugilite's form is probably the biggest stretch in the entire segment. You're essentially claiming that if things were a-ok, they would've been able to get Nicki Minaj, a celebrity voice actor who would probably be very expensive to contract and would have to deal with a shitload of time scheduling issues, just for a 10 second cameo in two other episodes, one of which isn't even about Sugilite. Lest I start quoting logical fallacies but I can't see why this should violate Occam's Razor.

The point about Pearl singing about how "she needs to be stronger than Sugilite" is also just so incorrect I don't know why it was included in this video. Did we even watch the same episode? The context (S1E20) for the singing was that Steven wanted to train because he looked up to Sugilite and wanted to be strong like her, and dismissed Pearl when she said that there were more ways of being strong. Cue the singing about how Pearl wishes that Steven looked up to her as strong (which she thinks is "strong in the real way") like Sugilite, and it's heavily hinted that she's jealous. NOT about how she "can't be strong in a real way unless she beats up some black woman". This was also lifted directly from the source with a couple of words changed, so I'm surprised that you didn't fact check this as you were editing the footage in.

- I'm not entirely sure about what your specific issue about the inclusion of the human zoo is. If it's because of an inclusion of a human zoo, then it's silly because it's owned by the space facists (diamonds). It's not like Steven (and by extension the show) is promoting the concept of a human zoo; if anything they're against it since the entire plot of the couple of episodes that deal with it is that they wanted to rescue Greg from one. If your issue is to do with the fact that it was designed as a utopia instead of what they actually were, then the only thing I can really say is that one was designed to make fun of black people as animals, and the other was to preserve human life. Other than that I don't really have a strong argument, so I'll concede.

- Concrete can be seen as racist (even if Lamar said that the blackface wasn't intentional), however I'm confused as to why you pin the blame 100% on Rebecca. Especially as it was Lamar Abrams was the person who designed it. I don't want to hear it's because she claimed 100% responsibility for it; what would be the alternative? She throws one of her team members under the bus? Otherwise I don't understand enough about the situation

As for your source(s), you claim you have multiple but you only link one. I found a very strong rebuttal for it (minus the Bismuth part because the follow-up episode wasn't released at that point):

I didn't watch the rest of the video since I was honestly so unimpressed with the amount of twisting and cherry picking in this small 10 minute segment.

Shortly after that tweet was sent, I got a response in my email:


So from what I've concluded:
  • It's okay to use a source that deals with racism even if it was made by someone extremely racist and is attracted to children, because it agrees with Lily.
  • Putting in "joke" arguments is okay because it will trap people who try to think critically about it. And people who haven't seen the show at all will take it at face value
  • The entire point of the video was not to criticise the show, but just to verbally abuse Rebecca Sugar? What??
I'm not entirely surprised by that last point since Lily didn't even care that Concrete (the black-face concept art) was designed by Lamar Abrams, a black man. She just included it as a way to shift blame onto Sugar even if she had almost no involvement in it.

I don't fucking know. I'm just angry and needed somewhere to vent. I did some googling after I sent another email and found out that Lily deletes critical comments (which makes a lot of sense) and found this thread as well.

I did send a second email and tried to be more diplomatic about it, but I doubt that Lily would respond. It's hard to discuss this with anyone

A lot of people watching the video haven't seen the show at all and think this is a much bigger issue than it actually is because they lack the context of the episode.

Hearing things like 'And when the main central cirtiticsm of the show is "Steven Universe's executive producer is an idiot who shouldn't be allowed to run anything"' and you not refuting the Concrete point makes me think that this video was more a hit piece on Rebecca rather than a criticism of the show.
