I honestly don't know why they're sticking up for some blind person that was upset over their shitty eyesight not allowing them to buy an ugly Dragon Ball Funko Pop and an overpriced blu-ray. The forum had some white knighting from ANN staff, of course. I'm sure they're doing it under the "personal views are my own and do not reflect my employer" caveat which means nothing.

Does anyone know what a website has to do to be compliant for the screen reading software? Is it when there's a text description of the pictures on a website I sometimes happen to catch while it loads?

Screen readers are only effective if the site is properly coded. In HTML5 there are actually "sections" that when designated such are ignored by the reader with only the content being expressed.

Alt text, properly labeled within the image source tag will be read aloud (I.E. <img src="waifu.jpg" alt="Picture of Big Chested Anime Girl"/> So as the screen reader proceeds through the content, the blind girl would hear "Picture of Big Chested Anime Girl". Which may not do her any good depending on whether she could ever see and has a point of reference. That's why good accessibility practices would be more along, "Picture of a Girl."

I would use things like, "Picture of the Sky" as opposed to "Picture of a Blue Sky". The thing about ADA is it applies "reasonable" accommodations by employers and places that hold themselves out to the public. So a retail mall will have ramps and 3' radii on there switch backs, etc.

As far as the web goes, unless your some kind of government, educational or advocacy type site, I don't believe you're required to include any kind of special accessibility functions like font sizers, color bind palettes etc. If your coding is web standards compliant, responsive and clean, most anyone can enjoy it.

You underestimate blind people.

A blind dude don't know what blue looks like, but the color precision will still let him know about the weather on the picture. For him, "blue sky" is like an expression, he doesn't know what blue is, but the concept of a "blue sky" still as a meaning: it implies it's sunny, and warm, probably windy.

Same goes for the anime girl, not only the big chested make sense (blind dudes totally know what big boobies are), but even the very concept of anime style isn't foreign to blind people as, while they can't watch anime shows, they can still touch anime miniatures. And therefore, on an online shop especially, someone blind would want to know if the miniature on the picture is anime or not, and if it's big chested or not.
