Yeah, a willingness to throw down and potentially have your mind changed by a debate goes a long way in fostering competence in any field. I don’t know about Catholics, but lively disagreement about important ideas seems pretty central to Jewish culture (and certain other denominations of the Christian church). My pet theory has been that this accounts for most of the overrepresentation of Jews in positions that require critical thinking. Aggreableness really is the enemy of clear/persuasive thought.I was shooting the shit with a friend this weekend about why the Supreme Court is all Jews and Catholics and my theory is that both groups have 2000+ years of debating whether a sea turtle is a fish or whether raspberries contain hidden insects.
No topic too obscure or theoretical not to sperg at length about.
Everyone should learn to participate in debate; instead we’ve raised two generations of children to be “kind” and “respectful”(read: condescending) to people they fundamentally disagree with.
