Ninth-grade students at a Texas high school were disciplined for 'slave-trading' their black classmates in a group chat called Slave Trade, N***a Farm and N***a Auction.
Students at the Daniel Ninth Grade Campus, part of the Aledo Independent School District, had been communicating in a chat they made on Snapchat.
The ninth graders would play a 'game' where they listed prices for the black classmates, 'trading' them with each other, NBC DFW reports.
One student was deemed to be worth $100, while another was given a value of just $1, because his peers didn't like his hair.
According to a statement from Superintendent Dr Susan Bohn, the district learned of the incident more than two weeks ago. They said the students who took part in the 'auction' cyberbullied and harassed the students. The Aledo Independent School District would not specify what the disciplined entailed for the students, according to the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
'There is no room for racism or hatred in the Aledo ISD, period,' Bohn said in the statement. 'Using inappropriate, offensive and racially charged language and conduct is completely unacceptable and is prohibited by district policy.'
The superintendent later added: 'This incident has caused tremendous pain for the victims, their families, and other students of color and their families, and for that we are deeply saddened.'
In a letter to students on April 5th, Principal Carolyn Ansley said that the incident 'led to conversations how inappropriate and hurtful language can have a profound and lasting impact on the students and classmates involved.'
Parents and activist in the community described the incident as the norm for the district, irate at the handling by administrators.
'Calling it cyberbullying rather than calling it racism... that is the piece that really gets under my skin,' said Mark Grubbs, a father to three former Aledo ISD students. Things were so bad for the father's kids, he pulled them out of the district.
'A lot of racism. My son being called out of his name and what not and it got to the point he didn't mind fighting and that didn't sit right with me and my wife,' Grubbs said. 'My son was never a fighter.'
Tony Crawford, an activist and leader with Parker County Progressives, described the incident as 'another in a long line of incidents that are swept under the rug.'
'Can you imagine what it's like for somebody to put a price on your head? I cannot imagine the embarrassment and hurt that people you might be friends with are having that conversation,' Crawford said of the teased students.
Eddie Burnett, president of Parker County NAACP, shared that he learned of the incident on Sunday. He, along with other members of the community, plan to attend the Aledo school board meeting on April 19.
