I can attest to this in my brief escapades going into software development. Though in every profession you have oddballs, but for some reason in programming you find them a little more often. The Troon dynamic is also true, but again though those are the only real "women," you will find in that type of environment anyways. Most of the friends are tradesmen that are into normal shit, so I have a fair balance in the autistic vortex known as programming.
Though to get back on topic with Derich, to mention what another poster said about his limited understanding of the field as well. Typically parents like to stick autists into the computer courses, because it doesn't require the normal amount of interactivity which most other professions tend to require.
As well, the typical meme that because someone is on the spectrum, that they would make a decent programmer. In certain aspects you have to be a bit spergy, but most spergs that get thrown into these type of courses can't absorb the material properly, just generally because it requires a lot of processing power the slow in the heads generally lack.
Derich would probably fail out only because that he is more concerned with e-thots and Twitter clout, than actually doing something productive with his time. yeah the whole “autists are computer whizzes” thing really causes parents to pigeonhole them in hope that they don’t actually need to teach them social skills bc they can just code monkey their way through life.
