IMPD responds to mass casualty incident at FedEx facility on Indy’s southwest side

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating after multiple people were wounded in an active shooter event on Indy’s southwest side Thursday night.
The IMPD said the shooting happened in the 8900 block of Mirabel Road. This is the location of a FedEx facility. When officers arrived, they encountered an active shooter incident.
Preliminary information from the department indicates the shooter took his own life.
There were several people injured in the shooting. Others were transported to multiple hospitals. Exact victim information was not readily available as of the time of this report.
Police do not believe there is an ongoing threat as of this time. They are asking anyone with family members that work at the facility that they have not been able to get in contact with to go to the Holiday Inn Express located at 8555 Stansted Drive.
FedEx sent a statement regarding the shooting saying:
“We are aware of the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility near the Indianapolis airport. Safety is our top priority, and our thoughts are with all those who are affected. We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities.”
The Indiana State Police says I-70 was closed in both directions between I-465 and Ronald Reagan Pkwy due to police activity in the area. The interstate has since reopened, but there is no access toAmeriplex Parkway from either direction.
We have a crew on the scene. One of our reporters spoke one of the victim’s family members, who says his niece was in her car when a gunman started shooting at her vehicle.
“She called as I was asleep at home. She said there was a shooting in the FedEx. So we just drove from Brownsburg,” said Parminder Singh, the uncle of one of the victims.
Singh tells us her daughter did not know who the shooter was.

Another man tells us that his wife works in the facility. She texted him to tell him that there was an active shooter at the facility.
“My wife works in there and she texted me to tell me there’s an active shooter and we communicated back and forth for a while, she’s since notified me she’s okay,” said Ian Johnson. “After I communicated with her for a while, then it went silent for a while, so I came here just to see what was going on and she texted me I’m okay.”
Johnson said you never think something lik this might happen, but it always can.

Multiple people shot, gunman fatally shoots self at FedEx facility

Multiple people were shot late Thursday night at a FedEx facility on the southwest side near Indianapolis International Airport, police said.

The scene has been declared a “mass casualty, Level 1,” according to dispatches. The declaration allows more emergency responders to go to the scene to provide support.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was sent to reports of shots fired and an active shooter shortly before 11:10 p.m. Thursday at 8951 Mirabel Road. That’s the address of the FedEx facility in a commercial area with a couple of hotels and multiple warehouses just south of the I-70 interchange at AmeriPlex Parkway.

Police did not immediately have information on how many people were shot or their conditions. Unconfirmed reports said at least five people were dead.

No information was immediately available from police on whether the shooter was in custody.

IMPD was expected to hold a briefing shortly after 1 a.m. Friday at a nearby hotel.

Jeremiah Miller had finished a shift at the FedEx facility and was preparing to work a second consecutive shift when he and a coworker, Timothy Boillat, heard gunfire, up to 10 shots.

Miller said, “This made me stand up and actually look out the entrance door, and I saw a man with a submachine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open. I immediately ducked down and got scared and my friend’s mother, she came in and told us to get inside the car.”

About an hour after the shooting, Miller and Boillat were telling other workers not to come to work for the next shift.

Boillat said, “I didn’t exactly see a person get shot but, after hearing the shooting, I did see a body on the floor behind a vehicle…. Luckily, I was far enough away where he (the shooter) didn’t notice me or see me. So, thank God for that.

I-70 reopened shortly before 1 a.m. Friday after being closed for more than 90 minutes between I-465 and Ronald Reagan Parkway. However, Indiana State Police said, AmeriPlex Parkway was closed south of I-70 and the ramp from the interstate to AmeriPlex Parkway is closed.

IMPD, through a public safety app, has advised anyone concerned about family members to go to the Hilton Garden Inn Indianapolis Airport, which is south of the FedEx facility.

The FedEx incident is the fourth mass shooting in Indianapolis this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The others were March 15 in the 2300 block of North Harding Street, Feb. 13 in the 3800 block of North Sherman Drive, and Jan. 24 in the 3540 block of Adams Street.

What kind of monster shoots up the night shift? Thise poor sods already have it hard enough.
That was probably when they normally checked in for work. So they wanted to make look normal as possible. Or he thought it would be easier targets at night.

An overworked employee with anger problems. The phrase "going postal" came from a spree of shootings like this in the 90:s.
Right. I find employees are usually stressed with shipping like Amazon, Fedex, USPS and the UPS, as well others. Some people just snap!

What the fuck. Why....

I vaguely recall an infamous other FedEx shooting. Iirc a crazy lady did it. Case happened in mid 80s or early 90s?

Nothing suspicious about the rash of mass shootings, nothing at all.

The Bryan one died despite the fact that we still don't know how he got the gun and what type was used. I feel that if he had a "big collection" or voted Trump or picked up one at the sporting goods store a few days prior we would've known by now. Almost as if there might have been outside forces at play... 🤔
