A 21-year-old man who drank 4 energy drinks a day was hospitalized with heart and kidney failure - Day 10

  • A 21-year-old man in the UK had to drop out of university after months battling a mysterious illness.
  • Doctors found he had heart and kidney failure after drinking four energy drinks daily for two years.
  • Caffeine overdose can be life-threatening, with symptoms like breathlessness, nausea, and tremors.
A 21-year-old man was hospitalized for heart failure and kidney failure after drinking more than half a gallon worth of energy drink every day for two years, according to a case study published April 15 in BMJ Case Reports.

Although he eventually recovered, the man was initially considered as a candidate for organ transplants, and he spent more than a week in intensive care, and nearly two months total in the hospital.

The patient drank four 500 milliliter cans of energy drink daily, wrote the study authors from St Thomas' Hospital in London.

That's about 640 mg of caffeine a day, well over the recommended safe dosage of 400 mg of caffeine, according to the FDA.

"I think there should be more awareness about energy drink and the effect of their contents. I believe they are very addictive and far too accessible to young children," the patient said in the case study report.

For months prior to being hospitalized, he had been suffering symptoms such as tremors, shortness of breath, and indigestion so severe he dropped out of university.

The case highlights the potentially toxic side effects of energy drinks that contain huge doses of caffeine, which can lead to serious and sometimes life-threatening health issues.

Caffeine overdoses can be fatal

Caffeine, the world's most popular psychoactive substance, is safe to use in moderation, helping billions of people get through their day in the form of coffee and tea. It offers health benefits such as improved focus, mood, and energy.
But too much caffeine is risky, with side effects like anxiety, heart palpitations, and low blood pressure. In severe cases, caffeine overdose can lead to unconsciousness and even death. Caffeine overdose has also been linked to metabolic acidosis, a potentially serious build-up of acids in the body that can lead to kidney failure.
More concentrated sources of caffeine are more likely to cause overdose, meaning that energy drinks are riskier than coffee and tea.
Most dangerous, according to case studies, is caffeine powder in supplements for energy, exercise and weight loss. A scoop of this highly-concentrated powder can contain the caffeine equivalent of 50 cups of coffee or more.

I fucking hate this trend where I keep seeing adults identify as children. Was it Katy Perry who had an abortion in her 20s saying she was unable to have kids because she was "just a child myself"? Either give up your right to vote, drink alcohol, have sex, smoke cigarettes, work full time/for minimum wage, etc. Or shut the fuck up. We are so fucked when people want all the rights of being an adult, but will regularly jump back to the "I am but a wee babe, I didn't know any better" bullshit to avoid responsibility. Just take the fucking L and say you were a retard who fucked up your body because you didn't learn basic biology.

It probably wasn't just the caffine, all kinds of shit gets added to energy drinks. Just the sugar (or fake sugar) alone makes it unhealthy as fuck.

No joke don't touch these, one time after consuming 2.5 of 4 473ml cans I had a huge scare. My heart rate was beating insanely fast and my hands and feet went cold. I threw up and my body was shaking like a leaf. I thought I was going to die. Yeah I haven't touched energy drinks in years and never will again.
It's because you're a fucking pussy. A properly brewed mug of coffee is somewhere around 200mg of caffeine.

In my youth i used to take 600mg pills which were a bit much since they gave you the sweats and slight tremors.

I once had something like two grams over a five hour span which was way too much, made my guts hurt, gave me the shits and put me to sleep way to early. Never took anything approaching that dose again.

Go to a psychologist or something.

Energy drinks are for amateurs. Caffeine tablets are the shit. They're cheaper than energy drinks and more potent than a cup of coffee.

Meanwhile, 600mg of caffeine per day isn't that much. It's probably all the other crap they put in energy drinks that really fucked old mate over.
Caffeine tablets got me through graduate school + concurrent full time work in a physical job.

The real niggas know what's up.

Related, but do any of the Americans on here remember 4Loko? I think it got banned, but an exchange student during my undergrad brought a few cans over. That shit was wild. I didn't know whether to kick back and chill, or go out and climb some abandoned buildings.

I had something similar to that experience (no throwing up) when I was doing an all-nighter at 15 or 16, but that was me making the mistake of drinking coffee on top of an energy drink.

Now, I drink about 150-300mg most days and the most that happens is that I become more paranoid and there's a chance I get the urge to go to the bathroom.

I didn't try any, but some of my friends tried it back when it was still basically blackout in a can. Turns out massive amounts of caffeine and alcohol at the same time can make you forget large chunks of what happens after you drink them.

I don't have enough fingers or toes to count the number of people I know IRL and see develop kidney stones after drinking 2 or more Monsters a day. They may work, but they're not a substitute for better health/diet. And don't get me wrong, I'm a coffee fiend; but I also take in an extra amount of water per how much coffee I take in.

I can't wait to see the ChubbyEmu video on this idiot.

He probably didn't drink enough water. Caffiene is dehydrating and if he never drank water and just did 4 energy drinks a day, that's pretty fucking insane. The problem is there's all sorts of additives and shit. I'd wait if they're doing a paper to see if they find what the culprit is exactly.

I looked up when they banned it, and it seems I tried the original version shortly before it was changed.

And agreed lol

Doesn't shock me when even younger people with their shitty Amerilard diets succumb to this kind of thing. I drank about a gram's worth of caffeine per day for about a year and a half, and I definitely was worse for the wear. Definitely not a good idea.

Bruh my gun team leader drank at least double this many energy drinks on deployment and was just fine. There's something more to this story.
Well this guy had his kidneys fucked up, I guess he had stones (it is not clear in the paper, they didn't performed a CT scan to find out). Patients with chronic kidney disease can live a long time without knowing that they are sick, until the disease is too advanced and it causes symptoms, as in this case. His heart was fucked up secondary to CKD and the toxic effect of caffeine.
Now he has to live smelling like piss until he gets a kidney transplant, and then a long (?) life eating inmunosupressors with they side effects.

Why are europeans and young amerifats so weak lmao
I drink at least 7-9 cups of coffee a day

I used to drink energy drinks. Nowadays, I stick to instant coffee.
I've consumed 600mg of caffeine every day for 10 years. This retard probably never drink water and ate like shit.

Fucking amateur.
Exactly. If you're going to OD on energy drinks, at least balance it out with food and water. Same thing with coffee.
