Aside from the fact NATO membership is the only thing keeping Putin's fingers from reaching even further into Eastern Europe? The USSR may have been defeated, but the overall strategic reasoning that saw Eastern Europe get set up as buffer states did not. We had already accepted Russian control of those places as a fait accompli once in 1945, and doing so again would have been politically untenable, especially since it would have been the second time in living memory for many, many people. The Poles, Hungarians, Balts, and Czechs all wanted and still want absolutely nothing to do with any further Russian attempts to control their nations, attempts that would be inevitably coming and will be coming if NATO leaves.
TL;DR Eastern Europe has always been a playground for the larger powers to the West and East to fight for control over, and the US and UK are the first overlords not interested in using their territories as invasion springboards.

Disagree with all this talk on Russian imperialism, it's just not going to happen. Does Russia still want its buffer territory? Yes, but no longer in the Stalin-Khruschev sense; maintaining the Warsaw Pact was expensive and Afghanistan showed the limits of what direct occupation gets you. What Russia is really after in Eastern Europe is Finland or Austria - i.e. a swath of countries inherently neutral that are not tied through military alliance to the west. It maintains Russia's geopolitical security, lets those countries engage with whoever they want, and avoids the myriad of problems coming through invasion and occupation. Russia just doesn't have the conventional military strength needed to put large chunks of Europe back under the yoke, or even maintain an attempt for that long.
Another thing too oft forgotten too is that Russia had no real issue with the former Warsaw Pact members and the Baltic States joining NATO; they knew it was going to happen and couldn't stop it if they wanted to (which is why you saw more Russian bitching when the likes of Montenegro signed up). Where the buck stopped for them was "true" USSR territory in Ukraine, Belarus, and the Caucasus. If part of the mutual guarantee of Ukraine back in the early 90s for example specified Ukraine to stay outside of international alliances, a lot of this crap likely would've been avoided.

Anybody who talks about the "based Zoomer" has never met a Zoomer in their entire life and hasn't been paying attention. OnlyFans arrived on the scene in their generation. Sugaring has become more prominent in their generation, as has simping. The shift to calling prostitution and pornography "sex work" instead of "prostitution and pornography" is a change that happened in their generation. The false (as in, the demand is feigned) idolization of ultimately weak men (e.g. "softbois", male feminists) that are inevitably ignored and practice and accordingly become bitter on top of malformed? The crushing of young girls under the weight of the FtM/nonbinary craze? The rising exposure of children to internet pornography? The meteoric rise in mental illness? I can't imagine that I'm doing much more than scratching the surface right now.
They didn't start this, but that's the worst part-- they were born in and molded by this zeitgeist, and they hardly know anything else in part because they've been taught to spurn opposing worldviews like those provided by religion as "oppressive". The "based Zoomer" cope is an extension of "someday the people will have had enough" cope-- it's a way for people lacking in imagination and will to think that the egregious mass of problems they can clearly see will magically resolve themselves without intervention started or perpetuated by them, based on a not only a failure to understand that spontaneous social change doesn't occur until the bread and circuses stop (and we have a lot of bread and circuses in Current Year + 6) but also a fatal misunderstanding of the nature of the displeasure that's budding.
After all, just because there are Zoomers that have had it with SJW antics does not mean that they've suddenly gained new appreciation for conservative values. Rather, it typically only means that they're tired of shrill authoritarians killing their fun (these are a lot of the people that were attracted to the conservative movement or fell in its orbit after the first SJW flare up in ~2014, for the record). At best, they have some unjustifiable discontent about the direction society is headed-- for example, they may recoil in disgust watching abortion advocates protesting for the abolition of all restrictions on abortion, but they have no good reason as to why that's the bridge too far. "Viability"? It's still a fetus and it's still in the woman's body, it's her body her choice or whatever, and the fetus hasn't a right to the woman's body or resources. The most that they are is squeamish, and they'll rightfully be trampled underfoot because nobody needs to suffer people who only have the will to barely stammer out indications of their cowardice. They fall in line, anyways, because they're gutless, they have no real convictions (or they substantially agree with said authoritarians, anyways, but not with their presentation and how bad it makes them in particular look), they're willing rhetorical paraplegics that haven't the desire to connect dots, they're cradle NIMBYs, and they subconsciously realize the aforementioned.
Many Zoomers are clearly lost. But too many people would rather hold to the comforting fiction that everything will get better without any need to get their hands dirty, so it's likely that this generation will reproduce (somehow) as they descend down their spiral, and the next generation will be even worse (maybe we'll get literal corporate camgirl farms).

Zoomers as a generation aren't mature enough to actually gauge anything out of yet. Late Millenials caused all that shit. My cousins are the most demure teens I've ever met in my life and are more afraid to share what they actually think than anything else. If I had to make a judgment now, they're the silent generation reborn: children forced to pose and be ignored until they're needed for bullshit woke points. The oldest I know are so utterly lost and apathetic when they're not thoroughly pissed at everything.
It's too early to take the doompill and all you need is to take a look at history to know pendulums swing back and forth all the time. What's happening now is neither unique or special. Tools have changed as well as belief but it's all fundamentally the same.

That right there is a huge problem sign. This is a generation where the men don't fuck, the women are either fearful or coldly whorish with no in-between and their spirit has no outlet. Even Early Zoomers find the Core Zoomers dumb as hell which is something I gleaned from a girl I knew as she became a cop and the vibe i consistently get when i meet them is very manicured and transient.

There's no doompill in what I said. My point is that meaningful action is necessary, and that the "based Zoomer" expectation is a cope because it assumes that our present political spectrum will stay the way that it is in the long run and that Zoomer dissatisfaction with the current zeitgeist will make them conservative-- even more, by those standards.
I don't care what your cousins, or anyone for that matter, "thinks"-- everyone "thinks" a certain way until they actually get pressed, and suddenly they're spouting whataboutisms and defenses of the very things they supposedly decry. Even if they don't get to that point, what's the value of what they "think" against an overbearing multi-institutional cultural behemoth that had decades of head start? Regardless of how old your cousins are, I'm not saying they need to become active activists or perform political infiltration, but those things are on the list of good things that can be done, and it's necessary that thought be transmuted into some kind meaningful action rather than coping mechanisms that aggressively assert that nothing has to be done now, while the decay is ongoing.
I've taken a look at history-- the pendulum conception is largely fallacious and unfounded, and supposing there was any merit to it in any context, the reality is that it still takes an active will to swing that pendulum. It's this thinking that enabled liberal activists to achieve the successes they've had, and present conservatives have their work cut out for them because (in the best case, anyways) they're demanding society to discipline themselves and to feel shame for not doing so.
In the worst case (where we are now, largely), they peddle outrage porn and unfounded hope to inactivate the masses so they can make them consoomers of their "how to stop the left" bibles.
