It's a form of self-delusion. He can't come to term with his past and his hilarious numerous mistakes, so he rewrites the past as some sort of Mary Sue fiction and makes the few people who agree with it in to his world.

Look at the Dogpatch video: you'd expect it would just be about Patch, but he uses every opportunity to lie and cover his own ass.

I guess that's what happens when you'd rather sperg out on the internet instead of getting help.
