Communism is never a populism movement. In Addios Africa, a minority ethnic group sided with the communist to take control. The majority told them to fuck off and defeated their ass. For their victory, they chopped off the hands of this minority ethnic group. Also, the Russian revolution stopped being a populist movement in 1880's. Should also be noted that the people leading that revolution are not proletariat, as they never worked agriculture or took part in factory work.

I'd temporarily side with them anyways if the others were treating me as a lesser person because of my race. I don't like communism but I hate caste systems even more. No doubt many African Americans felt the same.

At any rate, the USA hasn't become a communist nation and equal treatment for all was gained so I'd say the riots did some good.
