There's never any acknowledgement that the consequences are completely disproportionate to the alleged crime.
Otherizing people is what every culture in the world has ever done. In America it had gotten to a point where everyone was someone's Other, and we made a joke out of all of us being misfits in some way, in some group. That became the thing we had in common.
And they want that gone.

This is one of the problems with it, thinking someone should have their career ruined over a joke they told in 2009 is fucking insanity.
This is the irony is the cultural climate of the 2000s was exactly the kind of thing that gets you "canceled" today and literally everyone engaged in it, even if it wasn't on Twitter, everyone told a joke or made some comment that would get you "canceled" today.

Of course, you're absolutely right. Otherizing is not an exclusively white or Western thing. As far as the United States is concerned, minorities and immigrants otherize each other all the time. LeVar's own people, American blacks, are very acutely racist and xenophobic. They're even nasty to non-American blacks! Yet we'll never see rich blacks like LeVar lecturing his own people about how they need to be accepting of non-blacks and foreign blacks. Meanwhile, in the safety of his gated community, LeVar does the opposite of everything he encourages working-class blacks to do.

I love when they realize all of their "work" will never absolve their original sin of being white. I didn't dig too deep into the background, but some black woman (@GatissJudy) on twitter was getting spammed with banana emojis. Some white woman (@LouiseRawAuthor) didn't do any research into the offending account and tried to explain away the racism. This thread goes into it:
