Plagued Waifu culture - Cartoon fuckpillows and the men (and women) who love them

It's a fair point. I'm not sure the effort Pygmalion put into Galatea is really that different in kind or degree to the effort waifuists put into their own obsessions (talent, yes, kind and effort no), but without divine intervention, I think it's preposterous to assume that a waifu, made real and given free agency, would choose to date these people.

Has anyone ever encountered a waifuist who's "settled" for an imperfect waifu? Like he was originally looking for some busty teenage anime girl to live wild with, but he eventually wound up with a fictional 47 year old, twice-divorced fat woman, simply because it was the best he could do and he didn't want to be lonely? Maybe he saw a cartoon in highschool, didn't really fancy the girl character at the time and lost touch after graduation, but then twenty years later they met at a reunion and were like, well, we're both unmarried and time's ticking so, whatever, might as well be lonely together?

I genuinely enjoy Daudelette's art. He's (?) got an aggressively Realist style; not afraid to draw himself as he is, "warts and all", which is always something I find rather refreshing in self-inserts.

Not sure. He could be trying to draw himself like Handsome Squidward and be failing miserably at it.

Jokes aside, I suppose the art has some merit in it's shamelessness. Forgive me for being a little faithful in humanity, but I think more effort on the part of the redditors would lead to marginally better art. You can't tell me this was their best effort unless they were drawing with their feet.

Yeah, that's certainly true. I'm assuming the self-inset character looks like a hideous frog-monster because the artist himself looks like a hideous frog-monster (much like Manda-Tee and her Barney Gumble looking insert), but that's just my assumption. The Realist elements could very well be unintentional.

Also sorry for the poor image quality

I decided to go on a deep dive with some of the more “normal” users of the sub that don’t comment as often, and the Gilgamesh girl, Diana L, is interesting.

Archive of her carrd.
Archive of her unfinished waifu carrd.
Her Twitter. (An archive of her tweets is attached.)
Her Reddit.

She seems to be a Floridian like Jordanna, and she’s also unsurprisingly fat. At least she’s vaccinated, I suppose.

She also has a room that reminds me of Niqua.

Her entire personality seems to consist of just talking about the pixels she loves and being a nurse. She has to be a CNA, right? Please don’t tell me a degenerate like her is deciding if someone lives or dies. I want to believe there’s at least some good in the world.

It also seems she got into a minor spat with another user, though they were anonymous.

A shame, if they at least channeled their waifu autism into getting super good at drawing then they could just pass as excentric artists with Quixotesque character. Their crazy bullshit will at least have a justification as the source of their will to improve and it'd be a little bit less sad but redditors like to shoot low, so low they hit their own foot.

Honestly if he’s this much of a mental basket case they should just ban him already. I’d be uncomfortable as fuck in their place.
Nah, this is the exact kind of person their community harbours. There's quite a few nutjobs if you go digging and if we want to be honest they're all bordering on schizophrenia encouraging themselves to go deeper into delusions. They just don't realize like genuine mentally unstable people are getting brought in and encouraged and it's causing stuff like this. They just scream "but it makes them happy!!"
plus i feel like banning someone because they're visibly schizophrenic would not go down well for the sub

I'm surprised this guy hasn't been locked away in a mental hospital yet. On second thought, I wouldn't want to inflict that on the poor staff.
The next picasso. His waifu would be so proud.

Man is worried that Undyne from Undertale might not be attracted to him.
Isn't that girl confirmed to be lesbian and that's one of the reasons why tumblr worships Undertale?

Yawn. Congratulations, you've dug up every twitter, deviantart and tumblr fangirl in existence. I'm here for the lolcows, not basic bitches of the internet.

One of the major problems in communities like r/w, aside from the obvious, is the severe lack of standards, to the extent that the only persisting principle is to not hurt another member's feelings. Which, as is increasingly apparent, very easy to do. So instead of people disagreeing, bringing up the occasional controversial topic and having a little spat like regular human beings, you have what amounts to automatons reinforcing each other's degeneracy.

In the waifu community as a whole, sure. There's not much in the way of standards or principles (and when your community is predicated on believing that imaginary friends are real and married to you, how could there be?) But r/w seems to be a special case.

I don't know how much the r/w community cleaves to their own rules, but the admins and moderators do have community standards, and those standards are actively fucked.

  1. Multiple Waifu: One waifu/husbando allowed. If something changes in your relationship and you break up and find someone else, then fine, that's different, but never more than one at a time. Waifuism is a serious commitment akin to actual marriage and should be treated as such. You behave in a way that befits being devoted to your 2D spouse, and this includes only being married to your one and only. Humorous image explanation
  2. 3D - Real People: No dating or being romantically involved with a real person while also claiming a waifu. This is considered a betrayal toward your waifu. The same as if you were married to a real person then dated someone on the side. If you find someone in real life that you truly love more than your waifu, then by all means pursue what will make you happier. But you cannot have both.
  3. Casual/Hugblanketing: This is a community for those who are in serious committed relationships with their waifu. If you are not totally committed to your waifu, then this is not the right place for you. Being "casually" into Waifuism, as in you aren't serious or devoted to them as a spouse, is not welcome here. Hugblanketing is a term where a waifu is used simply as a tool to make someone feel better. A hugblanketer will drop a waifu for a real person if given the opportunity. This is not acceptable.
  4. Headcanon: Headcanon is defined as creating previously unknown details about your partner. These can range from minor to major, from small details to entire personality aspects. What is banned: Changing your partner in a way that directly conflicts canon or changes their personality or character. (Ex. If your waifu is a shy bookish type but you want them to be loud and extroverted.) What isn't banned: Saying your waifu loves dogs when there is nothing saying they do or don't.
  5. Original Characters: Original characters are not allowed. The reason for this is much like the reason for the headcanon rule--you can change them as you please to suit your tastes as you change as a person. A serious relationship involves more compromise and acceptance for who someone being the way they are. Your loved one is not your creation to play god with.
  6. Sentience and "Mental Maturity": In this community we follow a couple of mental criteria for partners: 1. The character must be sentient. 2. The character must be 'mentally mature'. This means that they have enough mental capacity and awareness to participate in a healthy romantic relationship. This does not necessarily imply physical age but physical age and mental maturity often go hand-in-hand.
  7. Trolling: 'Trolling' refers to posting offensive or inappropriate content, usually for the purpose of ridicule. In this community it usually comes in the form of people posting 'joke waifus' or just generally making fun of us. If you see any troll posts report them to the moderators. Do not respond to them. It is everyone's responsibility to not give reactions to this kind of behavior. Arguing is counterproductive.
  8. Excessive Waifu Switching: Sometimes a person falls out of love with their waifu and they begin to look for someone else. We consider waifu switching unfortunate but it's unavoidable that people and feelings do change. That said, we do take action on those we deem to have switched excessively, in line with our casual/hugblanketing rule. If you're having relationship troubles, we highly encourage you to talk about it and look for support rather than keeping quiet and suddenly switching out of the blue.
  9. Advertising: Advertising of any form is not allowed. For example, it is okay to request/ask for a commission, but do not advertise your services in the sub. It is however, okay in the discord.
  10. Low-Quality Content: If a thread does not provoke discussion, doesn't celebrate an event (yearly anniversaries and the first 6 months only) or isn't originally made (basic transformations like templates, collages and picrew creations don't count) it is considered low-quality and can be removed. Face reveals will also be removed. No memes either. Moderators reserve the right to judge a post as low-quality.

As usual with online echo chambers, they have a rule (7) against "trolling", where "trolling" is defined so broadly and subjectively (it's "offensive" - to whom? In practice, the most easily-offendable person in the community) that it essentially amounts to a blanket prohibition against criticism and divergent views; "no free speech, because we can't handle it emotionally". That's concerning, but its bog-standard for Reddit, so no surprises there. The rest of the rules, except maybe for 9, have serious problems of their own, too, most of which I won't get into.

The worst rules are (2) and (3). That community staff would actively forbid users from seeking real human relationships is frankly horrifying. This is essentially the moderators saying "you are in a cult. You will have no outside relationships. You cannot leave." I've been following waifu communities for some years now, and honestly I'd much rather see waifu communities with no standards, where people reinforce their degeneracy in a haphazard manner and individuals are free to dissent and deviate from community norms without consequence, than to see waifu communities with standards like (2) and (3).

From personal experience I agree with both of these points. What makes r/waifuism a genuinely horrible place to be in is not the degeneracy they practice but the cult-like mentality they force upon young and/or stupid people. How they'd like the members to experience it is, ironically, like rule 3, a hugblanket. The moderators want the users to depend on r/waifuism, That usually works for a time, until people start to branch out to other communities or they find out the hard way that the discord server is not the wonderful safe haven that's advertised.
It's always about being "comfy". Everyone has to be "comfy". Your delusions are completely valid no matter how extreme they are and no one can tell you otherwise because that wouldn't be "comfy".
"You are in a cult. You will have no outside relationships. You cannot leave." is actually the perfect way to sum it up. I knew people who stuck around in the community despite not being as willing to participate because they just felt like they couldn't leave. The place traps you. There are still people there right now that know the place sucks but can't bring themselves to leave. Because it's a cult and it has them by the neck. Where are you going to go to get people to validate your 'relationship' if you leave? There is no alternative. r/waifuism is the way. I escaped by dumb luck and despite that my activity here kind of proves that I can never escape it.
The truth is that if the community allowed people more freedom, there would be less people in it, because everyone would realise just how bad it really is. So it's an echo chamber, because I know that at least to one person in that server, the number of people in it actually matters. It's a trap.

Man, a group will tell you a fictional character you love is real, loves you back, and can talk to you, and in return you depend on their group, cut ties with real people, break off friendships, and humiliate yourself for the internet to see, further strengthening your dependency on that hugbox in the group. It's fucked up.
