If I'm correct, she is the sole owner of their house, but Cali may have default common law rules so she can't evict her. This is the case in some (or all) Canadian provinces where living with a partner makes you partially financially responsible, similar to that of divorcing a married partner (half your combined net worth, monthly paycheck, etc.).
I live in the leaf land and own firearms (its not pricey), in the states where its a God given right, you can purchase a glock for cheap (much cheaper then the initial cost in Canada). The fact that cost of the firearm is a factor, shows how little he has in his bank. The statement that he will get a safe shows that he will not have it available for an immediate life or death situation but instead have it as a fail safe with ample warning.
