There is someone in my extended family who faced such a situation. Substance abuse and stealing. He was kicked out and ended up turning his life around. Tough love can work.

EDIT: I should also mention that I think the bulk of Noah's problems aren't mental illness, but just simple laziness. Was he depressed over his girlfriend leaving him? Yeah, I can buy that. But I'm fairly certain that his 'woe is me' campaign has become more performative than anything. Yeah, he's sad, but nowhere near the levels of sad he's trying to come off as.

Well, firstly, where do you think you are, on Reddit? Take your moral grandstanding and throw it into an automobile wreck.
Secondly, no, Noah is not so much "mentally ill" as much as he is a piece of shit. He just thinks, that universe owes him something, that's why all of his "Oh, how I hate myself" are just means to an end.
Thirdly, yes, I did. Not with a family member, but with a childhood friend, who I honestly tried to help to turn his life around, but in the end after dozens of "ok, this time I'm doing it" I just cut all ties with him. Was it the best for him? I don't know, nor care. I have enough people in my life, who need my sympathy and will appreciate it.
Fourthly, as a person who deals with depression, I can surely say, that leaving somebody festering in their own self-pity and defeatist attitude is the worst thing you can do to that person. Even if he'll hate them at the moment and promise all sorts of stuff, like sending them to elders home, when he gets better, he will be thankful (if he still can do that, of course).
And finally, years of pats on the ass is what got him there, so there is no way for him to get better without changing that.

Paying rent, paying utilities, etc. Parents will usually do these things even if their spawns use them to the last drop.
