The most interesting thing about Kelly, aside from her being the worst case of Munchausen syndrome most medical professionals will ever encounter, is how absolutely fucked her sense of pain must be to able able to do this sort of thing. She has to have become accustomed to the worst pain a human can endure.
New fags, please stop all the hand-wringing. Read the goddamn thread, not only because it’s entertaining but also because it will save you the effort of being all, ”how on earth did she do this/why isn’t anyone getting her help/why isn’t she locked up?”
But since none of y’all will actually read it all, please read this before sharing your opinions about what should be done about Kelly:
She’s been destroying herself for years. She’s been institutionalized several times. She‘s been receiving lots of help, but she’s too fucking sick for it to matter. Her mental illness is not anything that will cause harm to others, she’s grounded to reality and knows what she is doing can hurt her, and there’s no real protocol for dealing with something like this because this is some outlier shit right here. How many people who aren’t drug addicts in 2012 Russia have you ever seen in such bad shape? Very few, if any, and because Kelly is one of the worst, no psychiatric system anywhere is set up to deal with her or give her help.
Yeah, she wastes resources better used on other people. That’s true everywhere but this is Canada, not Calcutta. No one is going to die because of Kelly hogged all the medical care. Canada’s got all kinds of waste going on with just Chantal and all her ER visits because she can’t breathe and it hurts to pee. It would cost Canada millions to develop a program to deal with Kelly, possibly more than it costs them to react to what she does to herself and because this is North America no one can just lock her up to save her life. Yet culturally we‘re not ready to just let her rot to death. Her docs will continue to do the bare minimum to keep her carcass afloat and little more, but they have to help her because this is a society, etc.
As appalling as it may seem, it is not illegal to pick your flesh off your bones, her mental illness isn’t delusional or psychotic, and she poses no immediate threat to anyone but herself. And because she’s dying on the installment plan you can’t even section her as a suicide risk because she does not want to die. She’s not overtly trying to kill herself. She just wants lots of attention.
