i think watching the anime itself doesnt really do much, but interaction with the anime 'community' or 'fandom' is what really mindfucks people because of how deranged and perverted so many of the people in these circles are
like, people will naturally attempt to fit in with a group they try to be a part of, to do that the standard procedure is to imitate and copy what established figures are doing. if that community you're trying to 'join' is full of deviants and perverts, some people will model themselves after that and become deviants and perverts themselves.

It's so easy to see here that the great offense committed was destroying the troon's illusion that he passed. He wasn't upset because the guy wasn't attracted to him (dude was just fine with his body), but that he didn't follow the prescribed societal rule that says you're supposed to act shocked and go "Oh wow, you're trans? I had no idea!". He wasn't being rejected - not by a long shot - but the sting to his ego that he didn't pass as well as he thought was enough to make him go off the deep end.
