There are quite a few youtubers who keep adding superfluous flourishes to their videos. Most of them cannot pull it off and come off as Nostalgia Critic 2.0 with their skits and costumes. Knowing Better would be an example. It all is painfully cringe and completely unnecessary.

This is very true and very disappointing. Because the sphere of media critique on YouTube is occupied by leftists, every single piece of it is predictable and samey.

At the same time, it seems like people who are not leftists reject the idea of looking at works through various critical lenses altogether, which is a shame. It is entirely possible to understand and employ Marxist or feminist criticism without considering it the most useful or fitting.

As such, the choice seems to be between leftists generating stale readings and mouth-breathers who think pointing out plotholes is all there is to it, few exceptions aside. I wonder if this situation will ever change. YouTube video essays are babby’s first media critique, and so it would be a shame if young people got an impression that this is what they have to pick from.

I finally got round to watching this. Right up my alley: I have read Killing Stalking beginning to end.

Killing Stalking in its content is nearly identical to much of yaoi and bara manga and slash fanfiction using erotic framing to depict sadomasochistic relationships. It is not meant to be ‘romantic’ in the traditional sense of the word, but it is meant to be sensual and titillating. Like rape and torture porn — but long and with a plot.

It is not a coincidence that Koogi, the author of Killing Stalking, retweets yaoi fanart of her characters. It is not a coincidence that Lezhin Comics, the webtoon portal which published Killing Stalking, traffics in homoerotic fiction. This is a psychological horror, yes, but it is also wanking material. All those sex scenes, as graphic as Korean laws would allow, did not appear by accident.

Killing Stalking is a decent work, but it is not novel in regards to its mixture of erotic and horrific. Gengoroh Tagame, a gay man, has been publishing sadomasochistic homoerotic porn since the late eighties, and it would be interesting to hear somebody explain pages-long genital torture and mutilation scenes in The House of Brutes as anything other than pornography.

It is hard to say what causes people to be so off in their analyses of works such as this. Perhaps they are unfamiliar with the Asian tradition and so cannot contextualise such fiction. Perhaps they can never put away the lens of their politics to inspect a work from different perspectives.

The author’s attempts to wrap his heads around the shipping community are very familiar — and very condescending. Why do people think this is ‘romantic’? Are women brainwashed by society into viewing abuse as love? Maybe straights simply cannot imagine queers having a healthy relationship? Could it be that readers are too simple-minded to decipher the message of the work?

There is an explanation far simpler that does not insult anybody’s intelligence: some people enjoy sadistic erotica. It may reflect badly on them, and it may be uncomfortable to think about, but it is what it is.

I would second this- that and now he's trying to keep the peace with her by wordlessly retweeting what she said while still being annoyed she put him into yet another stupid situation. Too bad she pays the bills and is more of a mom than an equal.
