I honestly have no idea how much of this is kayfabe and how much of this is Sterling thinking this is kayfabe while being an autist.
I know things work kind of the same in 'real' wrestling like the WWE and I don't wanna dog on them since they actually put on a show and their performers are in shape, but all this play-pretend LARPing is really fucking cringe, even by Jim's standards.

It does occur to me that an all troon wrestling federation would be a great idea, though, since manufacturing drama out of nothing is their favourite thing.

Despite being Jim Complains about Capitalism and Microtransactions Vid #327 this one is kinda interesting

  • opens up with threatening to show his chest and promptly assures that it's only his toy chest that he wants to show, but that Pandora's box is now open
  • defends himself against accusations being too repetitive. He argues he's only repetitive bc game discourse is repetitive/cyclic, bringing up game difficulty discourse as an example and chalks it up to game journalists hate. Because why would people dislike a car journalist who can't drive if not for blind hate
  • admits he hasn't done anything original
  • at 06:56 admits he hates video games and himself for making it his living
  • whines about losing couple thousand subs every week (again) and says he'll celebrate below 900000 sub count milestone

All in all this has a doomerish undertones (like saying that none of it matters), plus he's way less "tee-hee I'm wAhMaN", so I'm assuming hormones (like any drugs over time) don't give him the high they used to

The nice thing about totalbiscuit being dead is he doesn't have to reason with what's happened to his close friend and his downwards spiral. Jim was a fairly normal gamer dude circa 2012 and there wasn't much daylight between him and TB... this shit though? Pretty happy I don't have to cringe my way through TB pretending how great it is that his buddy fell through the social justice rabbit hole because his wife cucked him

The clickbait artist known as Bellular from Bellular News does a better job discussing gaming news from the big companies and smaller indie developers and SidAlpha does a better job talking about the bullshit artists in gaming. Jim hasn't offered anything new since Digital Homicide. All he has going for him is his slow downward spiral into troondom. Just another freakshow on Twitter/ Youtube.

TotalBiscuit was a major trans supporter. He kicked somebody out of a convention for making a trans joke once.

This definitely was a more interesting episode.

What gets me is his final point 'Repeat yourself or shut up' - The answer is simple Jim, shut up. It's clear he hates the discussions that happen within the hobby he participates in and he hates the other participants within this hobby. The only thing keeping him talking about it is that it's what his patreon subs pay him for; and having to square that against his anti-capitalist beliefs has driven him up the wall.

Who knows, maybe this is the straw that finally broke the camel's back and he'll fuck off and do something else with his life. Doubt it tho

"No one questions the positive [reviews]."

Wait, what?
He's not serious is he? Let me listen to the whole video.
...
He's serious.

Mass Effect 3, Driver 3, Dragon Age 2, Last of Us 2, and Gone Home.

He assumes the same controversies keep happening because "Capital G Gamers TM" instead of journalists.

If journalists didn't keep shitting the bed when it comes to game reviews, people wouldn't keep making fun of them.

Yeah no shit, that's why other creators diversify their content you lazy fuck.

I'm starting to feel like a shill for the guy, but I once again feel the need to bring up Spawn Wave, who does a great daily news round-up, more in-depth videos for bigger stories, industry analysis and predictions, and the occasional unboxing videos for random Gamestop purchases. On top of that, because he seems to have an engineering background or something, he also does videos where he repairs or upgrades old consoles, cracks open new consoles, and reminisces on horror stories from when he worked as a console repairman.

He also regularly engages with his viewers with daily polls and highlighting a comment of the day; driving up user engagement on his channel which I'm sure the algorithm loves.

Meanwhile, what does Jim do? The exact same video every week, regurgitating the same half-dozen topics, and once in a blue moon we're graced with a Jimpressions video where he just bitches about how much he hates video games. Who does Jim think he's catering to at this point?

Yeah he's not giving up his cushy dream job as a successful Youtuber until Bernie Sanders/Andrew Yang get Universal Basic Income down and he can live his true passion as a Drag Queen Indie Pro Wrestler.

You know what Jim you're right, being a Pop Culture critic is a meaningless passion in the grand scheme of things. In the end you only helped geeks get riled up over stupid shit & helped birth memes like Big Chungus.

This doesn't stop good Video Game Enthusiasts from making good content. The Digital Fondry guys will analyze every little detail of a game's fidelity. Ross Scott (Freeman's Mind) will continue screaming like a mad man over the preservation of video games. A little Youtuber like Grimbeard will continue critically analyzing little niche titles that most passionate gamers won't even be aware of.

Why? Because they love the medium. They're fascinated by these interactive works of art and the craftsmanship that went into them. The latter of the two don't even make much money from being content creators.

I'm not a communist, I won't harp that you don't deserve to be paid more than 6 figures for your half assed content. But it would be a decent thing to show some humility and be grateful that for whatever reason there's a lot of people who keep giving you money for what truly is awful commentary.

Cool recommendation I'll give him a subscribe. Gaming news is just fun background noise for me.

And I'm as confused as you are. This is one of the biggest complaints with game reviews overall, good or bad

The exact same video every week, regurgitating the same half-dozen topics
Watching his videos almost feels like how YouTube used to feel like around 2011-2015 for me. Formulaic weekly content with absolutely no audience interaction whatsoever. He gets given all these tools like the community tab, polls etc to do more things with his channel and get the audience to engage but he refuses to. If TB was still alive, he'd be doing the exact same thing considering he'd already started turning off comments before the arse cancer.

That's partly what's killing the channel, other YouTubers interact considerably more with their audience.

You could argue that's why streamers, and now vtubers, became so much more popular than types like Sterling: these people focus hard on audience interaction, or at the very least commentary that's crafted to the audience. Meanwhile Jimbo here is screaming the same words into the aether, again and again.

I think it's really separated the actual talented entertainers from the people who were just lucky to hit a cresting wave. If you look at guys like Critikal or Pewdiepie, they've been able to turn their hand and adapt to a whole bunch of shit because, whether you're a fan or not, it's obvious they're naturally charming, funny guys who people want to engage with, so they'll happily tune in to watch them do anything.

Then you have the ones like Jim or Spoony or Doug Walker, who only know how to be one way and do one thing. They can't adapt because when they try it only makes it more apparent how much of a miserable, unlikeable asshole they actually are (see: Spoony's infamous livestreams or Doug's attempt at a quiz show) so they're stuck in the position of either forcing pet projects their audience don't want or doing something they don't want to over and over which the audience will eventually tire of.

And the best part is pretty much all the ones who've chosen the latter path have rendered themselves completely unemployable due to their online antics, so they're totally fucked.

The whole video rings hollow for me because Jim has no-one but himself to blame for his repetitive content, lack of diverse content, and lack of content in general. Like OK Jim you get two claps for acknowledging the problem, now how about you actually do something about it?
Jim used to put a semblance of effort into his work and enjoyed a tidy living for it. Greenlight, squirty plays, random skits for fun like the Boglin stuff (his early boglinwatch stuff was genuinely great surreal humour), and actual game reviews were all things you used to be able to expect from Jim weekly instead of just a single Jimquisition that's not only late to a particular topic but more than likely barely addresses it. In fairness some of these things were brought to an end by things out of his control like the closure of Steam's Greenlight programme...but what did Jim choose to replace them with in all his new free work time? Nothing.
Complaints about each of those videos not getting big views each time like his breadwinner Jimquisition are just excuses, because what they achieved was to keep a core audience ticking over, as well as keeping the algorithm's eye on your channel to ensure discoverability instead of burying the one video you do put out each week (and complaints about the algorithm are a whole other thing, at this point a youtuber who isn't willing to work with it simply doesn't deserve to succeed).
