Few things about Phil genuinely make me angry, but oddly this is one of them. I don't even particularly enjoy roguelikes, and there are only a few I've sunk time into (like BoI). But everything about this is just a showcase of his absolute arrogance and ignorance.Phil complaining about Returnal being a rougelike.
He didn't do any research. Nobody asked him to buy the game.
If tips are low he's definately dropping it.
Playing a rougelike and complaining about it being true to its genre is like buying homosexual porn and complaining about it being gay.
He refuses to reconsider his playstyle to accommodate the game's mechanics. He's so blindly fixated on the notion of 'progress' and can't grasp the idea of 'runs' and it's really not that complicated. I agree with your example, but to put it in gaming context, this would be like getting angry at CoD multiplayer or SF for all the matches being 'one-offs' and there being no 'progress'. That is just fundamentally not how the game is designed, and he can grasp that. But this, he just refuses.
Then he shits on the whole genre and the roguelike mechanics as being 'bad'. They're not 'bad', it's a genre. He gets angry when people shit on JRPGs for being 'boring' because he enjoys the genre and in those moments, understands that people have different tastes that other genres cater to. His whole argument here seems to be that every game needs to have some structure of progress so that he feels like he can make progress during his streams and consider it a success. But, again, what are CoD and SF streams then? No critical thought and refusing to connect the dots.
Phil is fundamentally unable to separate what he doesn't like, and things that don't fit his experience from the notion that they are 'bad', but expects other people to be able to when discussing things he likes.
He's complaining about RNG and 'runs' as I write this. Yes, Phil, sometimes you get shit runs with bad drops. That's when you have to accept defeat, or you're fighting Satan with regular tears and learning how to make Isaac dodge like Neo. Sometimes it's Mario World difficulty, sometimes it's Lost Levels difficulty. This really isn't difficult to understand.
This escalated into a rant about how the games need to give him the tools to be entertaining. He can't make the game entertaining by himself. First of all, roguelike streams do fairly well on Twitch - there are successful streamers that play that genre exclusively. Second of all... doesn't that technically make Phil useless? So why does he deserve $200 if he is just a vessel for the game's entertainment...? Returnal is my vote for game of the year because it bodies Phil in ways even Dark Souls couldn't hope to achieve.
